David Cormack’s Saturday Selections – September 12th

The St. Leger has blown hot and cold with the racing public and professionals through the years but it is undoubtedly enjoying a resurgence in popularity of late and tomorrow’s renewal should only serve to further its revival in fortunes.

SANTIAGO (100/30 Betfair) is my idea of the likeliest winner but also one of the best bets of the day. His proven stamina will be a major asset here and with Group 1 winning form in the book courtesy of his Irish Derby win I rate him a 2/1 chance so the 100/30 looks value.

Pyledriver was impressive at York in the Great Voltigeur but he still has a bit to prove for me, particularly if this, as expected, turns into a reasonable stamina test. Hukum has looked progressive but I think needs to progress again a bit here. Galileo Chrome has been heavily backed and is three from three this season. He may turn out to be the biggest danger but his price is short enough given he probably needs to find a fair bit on form to date.

For the second bet we go to Ireland, slightly earlier in the day, and another Group 1 contest, the Matron Stakes, in which I think ALBIGNA (9/1 Betfair and Paddy Power) is worth one more chance. It may be that her trip to Santa Anita last November where she had a hard enough race when 4th in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, has taken a fair bit of recovering from but prior to that had looked one of the best two year old fillies in Europe when taking the Prix Marcel Boussac. Her shrewd yard have been keen to stress that the best of her is still to be seen this season and there is every possibility that an Autumn campaign may yet prove fruitful. In terms of price, tomorrow may be the day to catch her with the 9/1 looking attractive enough.

Have a great weekend whatever you are up to.

David
