David Cormack’s Saturday Selections – 18th January

Hi everyone –

We kept up our 100% record of wining Saturday’s in 2020 for the second week with 2/1 (adv) Frodon last week. We’ve had two winners from three selections this year so let’s hope we can add to it tomorrow.

A bit of a low-key card with some small field sizes because of the extremely testing conditions runners are likely to face at the day’s principal meetings. I still think there are a couple of decent bets on the cards.

First up is NEARLY PERFECT (5/2 Bet365 and Unibet) in the 1.15 at Ascot. He progressed well over hurdles while always looking like chasing would be his game. He confirmed that impression with a very taking win two weeks ago on only his second chase start. He looked full of promise there and with most of his rivals here having a bit to prove he looks a good bet at the 5/2 mark.

For the second bet it is up north to Haydock where BILLINGSLEY looks a great bet at 5/1 (William Hill). He is up 5lbs for a win in a novices’ handicap chase last time but his record over this minimum trip on heavy ground reads 3 wins from 3 runs (two over hurdles and that last time out chase win). That record strongly suggests that conditions tomorrow should suit ideally. That is unlikely to be the case for many of his rivals. Zizaneur was travelling like a winner when unseating last time at Taunton and is likely to be a danger while Go Long could go well in cheekpieces after drifting down the handicap a bit. The heavy ground is not certain to be ideal for either of that pair though and 5/1 looks a fair price for Billingsley who is lightly raced over fences and could have more to offer with plenty factors in his favour.
