Two for tomorrow and both run at York including one for the day’s big handicap, the John Smith’s Cup.
The first bet of the day runs in the race preceding the feature, the 1.55, where I think COMMUNIQUE (11/4 generally) might prove a very tough nut to crack on this first try at 1m 6f. He looked back to just about his best last time at Newmarket (where he has an excellent record) and a similar effort here would make him tough to beat. The trip is an unknown but I think he should not be inconvenienced by it. He holds strong form claims, comes here in good heart and looks a longish price at 11/4.
In the John Smith’s Cup (2.30) itself PIVOINE (12/1 generally) merits attention at a similar price to his SP last year, when he showed a nice turn of foot to win fairly emphatically. He is only 2lbs higher here, having been off since February, presumably with a repeat crack at this the aim. He’s won a hotly contested handicap on both his starts at York and he appears ideally suited to both the track and the likelihood of a strong pace to run at. He has a similar draw to last term (drawn 6 there, 4 today) and I think there is every possibility he’ll be bang there at the finish.
There are several dangers of which Michael Stoute’s Solid Stone is feared most of all but PIVOINE is hard to overlook given his profile.
