Queen of the Turf – The Dorothy Paget story – Quitin Gilbey

I found this one fascinating. Lots of historic stuff covered, the Aga Khan selling nearly all his horses before the war due to him thinking Germany would win I found very interesting. Her utterly ridiculous enormous bets ‘bancos’ and ‘double bancos’. Lots of Frenchie Nicholson stuff (which is always good to read) And Golden Miller + lots more.

The worst by a long way has to be Alex Bird – The life and secrets of a professional punter. Hard to describe how poor this book is. Should be called Contradictions of a professional punter.

It’s a slippery slope going down the charging for tips path.
You could end up like Brimardon and Isiris before you know it.

I can’t comment on the ruk format, but I agree with Yeats on the american racing program. The later broadcast is just what I want to see and hear in a racing show. It is horseracing and horsearacing alone. No dopey rubbish.

I realise the majority of horse racing fans detest everything about usa racing, but I love it, and have since it was covered towards the end of the racing channel days. Betting against blokes who are half cut, just back from a night out with no idea of what is running, other than a list of prices on betfair is a huge bonus.
If there any other usa lifers out there that remember Great Lakes Downs, I bet you miss it as much as I do.

Tune in and watch a race, you see an almost certain winner to follow.
Make a note of the horse and be really happy for the owner when it wins.

Who needs betting on horses, just be happy for the connections.

What a new great idea, a racing program with no mention of betting.
Add that to the currant format of pass the sick bag features, group class brown nosing, endless almost pointless pundits/analysts who only comment on things they know won’t upset anyone (unless they are foreign riders) anything else that happens simply didn’t happen.
At least with football if a player stinks the place out, the pundits will analyse it afterwards.

He must have been a professional jockey for about 10-20 years. Must have rode around every racetrack in the country, won the biggest races any NH rider can win, yet he brings none of that insight to his punditing. There must be something useful he can add to how to win at certain tracks/conditions/where to go clear/where to sit etc.
Instead all we get is garbage – the 1/50 fav is a nice horse, the winning rider is the hardest worker in the weighing room, the winning trainer is the hardest working trainer in the game, or this is the sort of race where you want to get to the winning line before any of the other runners.

Terrific mountain stage in the Dauphine as well.
Just the three category 1 climbs, one cat 2 and a HC climb of the legendary Col De Madeleine. Oh yes.
