    @TheBluesBrother

    1. If it is too much trouble, please don’t bother. But, there is no need to be so rude about it. I only wanted to know if it is possible!

    2. Thank you for pointing out that "There are so many Excel tutorials available on the internet covering every aspect on Excel and Macros, I have about every tutorial on the subject on my 1TB external harddrive."

I came to this forum for help because there seem to be some of the brightest minds in the business posting in here, yourself included! And this looks to be one of the dumbest things you have posted!

Your own work on standard times, speed figures and how to compile them, have interested me so much, I would like to try to understand them myself and learn some of your craft. I will never claim to be a speed handicapper of whatever it is you call yourself, just joe punter looking for an edge. If you do not want to help that is fine. I will find the information somewhere and please keep posting as I find most of what you say enlightening.

    Thank you for the replies.

A LOT of information to process! I have downloaded the 54000 race data, would it be rude of me to ask for a draw column. The reason being that I have read about a draw bias at various courses and was wondering if it was possible to take this into account using your Lbs/Length calc?

Also, when I learn to put a file on here, can I please get some help with the macro writing/coding? I am very interested in making my own speed figures, but do not understand excel. Sort of a public Work in Progress. Eg I can get the data I need, but how do I get excel to sort and store it. All the formulae I use are freely available on the internet and are from various articles/forums.

I have googled the subject to death, but don’t even know if I am looking for the right thing, or used the right terminology. Any help here would be brilliant.

    Again, many thanks

    Gary

Here is an example how I rated the 2yo "Dawn Approach" over 5f at the Curragh on Sunday 25th March.

One thing to note is that I do not use Weight For Age in my calcuations, you can if you want.

    1. The going time for the race was 6.93 secs above standard.
    2. The going allowance was -0.9 secs per furlong (the yeiding going was slowing the horses down).
    3. I use .2 secs per length.

    Now for the calculation:

multiply 5 furlongs by the going allowance i.e. -0.9

    5 x -0.9 = -4.50 secs

As the race was run 6.93 secs outside standard subtract the updated going allowance corection i.e -4.50. (note that if the going allwance was + 4.50 secs you have to add the going correction)

    6.93-4.50 = 2.43 secs.

Now divide the corrected going allowance of 2.43 by .2 secs per length.

    2.43 /.2 = 12.15 lengths.

multipy the lengths by the lbs.per length calculation which is 3.37 lbs per length for 5f trip at the Curragh.

    12.15 x 3.37 = 40.94

now subtract the figure 40.94 from 100.

    100-40.94 = 59.06 or rounded down 59.

As Dawn Approach carried 9st 5lb we now have to adjust the speed figure of 59.
For weight carried over 9st adjust the figure for the rating i.e.

    59 + 5lb = 64 ( this is Dawn Approach speed figure).

So if Dawn Approach had carried 8-11 we would have had to subtract 3lb from his speed figure i.e.

    59 – 3lbs = 56.

Once you have arrived at any horses speed figure you could add the Weight for age allowance but I don’t because it corrupts the ratings.

Speed ratings are very simple to work out

    Hi guys

I am new in here and would like to thank TBB for all the work that has been put into this thread. I have been following for a while and recently took up the task of trying to compile my own speed figures, but I have a problem understanding how to work out the rating, using the data and maths above, but for a GA of +0.9S/f.

If I follow all the steps I end up with a rating of -92.5 before adjusting for the weight carried. Is it my bad maths or do I need to do something different?

    thanks in advance

    Gus

    Hi guys
I am new in here and was hoping I could get some advice?
I am currently trying to be a tennis trader and wanted something for the closed season. I found an old book called "Mordin on time", read it and thought the All Weather racing season would be ideal.
I have signed up to Racing Post and, whilst I am trying to create my own speed ratings, am using their Ratings. I can create my own rating for a race winner and put it into the RP, but when it calculates the rest of the runners, does it use some sort of weight calc and can I turn this off?

As I am only looking at AW sprints (upto 1m2f) I think any weight gains or losses will be insignificant over short distances and the standard going, or is this a wrong understanding of the book?

Also, is there an easy way to get the RP Results card into an excel friendly format?

    Many thanks

    Gus
