Perhaps run the pony races between conventional races. with a bit of thought and organistation, There is enough time.
The hardened race fan will carry on as normal and probably ignore them , the "new" people may be interested.
Trotting! hmmmm, put them on last, so I can beat the traffic
December 17, 2009 at 10:30 in reply to: Acknowledgement – Does This Do Anything For The Sport? #264196With prize money so desperately poor – gambles are inevitable. We’d all do the same if we had the opportunity. Adds to the mystery of the sport which many people think exist anyway. We shouldn’t hide from the fact that "inside information" is a part of the sport – and possibly some of it’s appeal.
I really like State Of Play – it looks like he’ll run over hurdles this weekend.
Watched his National run again the other day – jumped brilliantly until two before Bechers second time round when he hit that hard. Hit the next too before having to swerve to avoid Silver Birch who fell in front of him at Bechers.
He lost his position after that – 3 out had about 4 behind him but was leading at the second last!! Weird run.
I reckon they’ve learned a lot.
Keep him over hurdles till Aintree I’m on at 33s!
PS: Watching again – how was My Will 3rd? Ruby performed miracles to stay on!
The peak viewing figures for The Breeders Cup according to the Racing Post.
ATR beat RUK 10 to 1.
Just shows how a subscription channel limits the number of people who can watch our great sport!
Have to agree with Yeats here.
Chepstow’s layout in December would be similar to Wetherby last week – rounding the long turn for home – the hurdle course switches from the inside to the outside.
The runners do not have to run round a few rails in the middle of nowhere – they just make their way over to the next flight.
Is that a possibility for Wetherby?
From the excellent photo posted by Mr Struthers – there is a natural inclination to lean towards the inside, especially if you have been racing against that rail for the last 5f or so.
I will leave it to the experts but in my view if Wetherby and the BHA do nothing(and from the tone of responses – this is the most likely course of action)
this will happen again – perhaps next time it won’t be on terrestrial television and we can all breathe a huge sigh of relief! It’s as clear as mud isn’t it? Ok jockey’s stop riding and look for the little yellow marker up in the air.
Let’s have Cheltenham laid out like that! Carnage!
Silvoir’s photo shows just how ridiculous the course layout is.
Barry is the scapegoat for more Wetherby mismanagement!
Geraghty has put his hands up. What more is there to the argument really? Are the people who are still moaning implying that he did it on purpose? Should he be banned for longer?
Sorry but I don’t think so.
He was head down, thinking tactics – the race just beginning to unfold. He is then expected to put all that out of his mind and think "right, which way do I go next"?
I have never ridden a horse in my life and never will, but even I can understand how he went wrong here.
But he rode a hurdle race earlier? So what? At the very point in this race, leading trying to draw the sting out of the other runners, he plain and simply forgot that he cannot follow the running rail he is currently using.
He was concentrating on race riding. i wonder how many other courses Barry had ridden on in the last twelve months expect you to leave a constant running rail to run around a marker just at the point where a race is going to begin in earnest. He admits the error and gets a ban. I think Wetherby should be punished too.
The course? Well – I’m afraid it’s another example of the downhill slope Wetherby has been on for a few years now. No doubt the 50p tape will be in place at the next meeting.
If it isn’t – it will happen again (NAP!)
Rant over – let it lie
I have to agree with the original poster here. RUK could learn something from watching other channels.
TVG make an effort to big up major events – good to see Graham Cunningham on there the other day putting across the European point of view, his straight talking no nonsense style will be appreciated in the US.
ATR has it’s faults – but they at least try.
In my opinion, RUK with the far superior racing are incredibly lazy. Since programme editor Jim Ramsey left the post, the product has become stale and boring. Some of the RUK presenters are excellent (some are shocking!)and would rise to a challenge if handed to them.
Someone needs to stand up, take charge of the channel and think of their subscribers. At the moment, a rainy Catterick Wednesday looks exactly like Cheltenham Gold Cup day.
Keep posting your ideas for RUK – one day they might just try one!
But don’t hold your breath.
