I’m another big fan of jockeys colours, have been since I was a kid, great to see that I’m not alone.
I have just completed a ‘results and jockeys colours’ blog that encompasses Australia’s four major Gr1 races (The Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, W. S. Cox Plate and the Golden Slipper, as a bit of a challenge, I decided to throw-in the Kentucky Derby as well. I must say, the Kentucky Derby was more difficult than the other four put together, mainly the early years, from 1875 to about 1920. Owners in America tend to often change their colours or add variations to their original design, unlike here in Australia where owners colours rarely change. This meant that finding the colours of a certain Kentucky Derby winner’s owner didn’t necessarily mean that you’d found the colours the winner carried on Derby day. Because of this, I spent many hundreds of hours searching through old newspaper articles and form guides as well as pouring over old race programs on ebay and old photographs trying to match up the colours that were used at that particular time.
As it stands, I’m sure that the information that I have posted in my blog is 99% correct. I originally thought that this would be an easy task, just use the official Kentucky Derby jockey silks pins that are for sale all over the internet as a guide. Not so. Most of the pins from the early years do not show the correct colours and/or designs.
I still have a small amount of written work to do on the Australian races (Owners details and colours) but the Kentucky Derby page is complete.
I would also like to eventually add a page with the record and colours of the ten greatest champions from Australia, Europe and the USA, I might need some help from you guys with the European top 10.
I’ll keep you posted on that one.

    My Blog address is http://thecoloursofhorseracing.blogspot.com.au/

Any comments, good or bad will be welcome.
    Cheers.

I’ve completed my blog on Crisp as well as 4 other great Australian Jumpers.
If anyone would like to check it out, the link is listed below.

Thanks again for the help and interest from the posters here.

Even though he ran his last race almost 40 years ago, there still seems to be plenty of Crisp fans around, today.

My researching of Crisp shows that he had a total of 41 starts over jumps that began on Jan 18 1968 at Kyneton in country Victoria where he finished second of 12 in a 14f hurdle race. His last start in Australia was on July 25 1970 where he won the Hiskens Steeple by 12 lengths at Moonee Valley.

His Australian record was 17 starts for 11 wins and 4 seconds.

After leaving Australia, Crisp had one start in the USA in the Colonial Cup (2m 6 1/2f) at Camden, South Carolina, he carried 11.6 and finished 7th of 22.

In England, Crisp had 23 starts for 9 wins 3 seconds and 3 thirds.

His overall jumps record is 41 starts for 20 wins 7 seconds and 3 thirds.

The legend of Crisp was born on Grand National day when he had the race snatched from him in the last few strides after leading to the shadows of the post. The great Red Rum carrying 23 lbs less needed every inch of the 4miles 3 1/2f to run Crisp down that day.

The extent to which Crisp endeared himself to the British racing public that day can be best conveyed by the headline from the Sunday Telegraph the day after the GN. ‘Red Rum Wins, But Crisp Is Immortal’

Sorry, I must have been looking at the wrong horse. Yes, it was April Seventh and not Captain Christy that won the ’75 Whitbread.
My records show that Crisp carried 10.13 that day.

espmadrid, I’m not sure what kind of record you have on Crisp, but you’ve really helped me put my list of races together with your information on this thread.

There are some minor details I’m missing on a few of Crisp’s races, so, I’ll run them by you to see if you help me out again:

The Margins on the ’71 Top Rank Steeplechase.

The margins on the ’73 Geoffrey Gilby Steeple at Newbury.

The riders (Kilvulgan, Merry Maker & Highland Abbe) and margins in the ’75 Jim Ford Challenge Cup at Wincanton.

And lastly, in the match race between Crisp and Red Rum in the Pattern Chase at Doncaster, there is no record of the actual weight that both runners carried it is always listed as ‘level weights’.

If you can help that would be great, if not, no worries you’ve already helped me more than enough.

    Many thanks!

    Thanks Slewman.

Interesting to note the misinformation that exists on the internet regarding Crisp’s retirement.
Both those links state that Crisp was injured after his match-race with Red Rum at Doncaster in November ’73 and was retired shortly afterwards.
    This is not so.

Crisp was injured, but returned to the track the following December where he finished 6th of 9 in the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup at Cheltenham.
Crisp had 5 more starts after that Cheltenham run with his best performance being a 3rd in the Great Lancashire Chase at Haydock.

Crisp’s final race was the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown in April ’75 where he finished 4th behind Captain Christy after almost falling at the second-last jump.

Crisp died in May 1984 aged 21.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
That response was more than I’d hoped for.
You must be quite an authority on Crisp.
I’d never have been able to find any of those details without your help.
Your information completes my research on all the details of Crisp’s 23 UK starts.

Once again, thank you very much.
