Interesting topic this one.
I have endurance horses, they race between 40 and 100 miles. (and you guys think the grand national is a long slog!!)
One is a VERY dominant mare, (she’ll kick 10 barells out of me as good as look at me) but is so competitive I can barely hold her when racing. She HAS to be infront of everything and would run until she died to get her head infront.
she knows when she’s done well, or when she wins , she grows about 2hands taller, prances around and looks down her nose at everything! She is a very arrogant horse.
Another is the complete opposite, very quiet, subdued and happy to follow everything around. However, when riding out on the gallops if ASKED to go infront she does and gets a spring in her step. She always looks dead proud of herself if she beats something!
So back on topic, I do think horses are competitive and the majority of them do aim to please and do enjoy getting their head infront… although there is always the exception!!
Re the how long is a horses memory? I don’t know, but one of my horses as a yearling had a bad trip in the trailer. at 8years old she is still a terrible loader, and appears to have the memory of an elephant!

Poetic license at it’s worst.
I really don;t understand some people – the "raced to death" comment got me too. But they forget that these horses are treated better than I am! They live in 5* accomodation with the best feed/shoeing/vet care etc, is this preferable to being chucked rugless out in a field to freeze whilst keeping someones grass down?
Sorry! It just annoys me, and most horses I’d say, enjoy racing.
Argh!
Liz
Just as an aside I see the animal rights lot are calling for Gillespie to jump ship because of the deaths – not sure how this works…!? Was he jumping out from behind hurdles pushing them over or something?
I think some people come to some very strange conclusions.
A friend sent me this link – http://www.animalaid.org.uk/press/0603chelt4.htm
The facts in it don’t seem to tally with other reports I have read .

IS
whats a Carribean Bar??????
Liz
(can’t cope with words more than one sylable at the moment…)
Terrible!
Tues was brilliant, 3 winners, 2 seconds and a third so happy days.
Wednesday, not a whisker! Had short lists of two for all races, in 2 cases the one i didn’t pick came first and the one carrying my money came 5th! Gutted!
Same again Thurs so retreated to the bar after the 3rd race…. same again Fri so retreated to the bar after the GC. i have never not watched the racing before but was far too cold and poor by that point!!!!!
Liz (thurs and friday night in the town certainly didnt help the gambling situation.)
Hmmm… been reading this post with interest. I think if I was IrisGift1 I’d be sat at home crying over the flak i was getting! There has been quite a lot of criticism thrown around of the way they are playing the game with him.
To be fair he wasn’t necessarily my choice for the GC – but I was on Monkerhostin, look where that got me!! – however the horse jumped OK and came back safe. if they hadn’t given the GC a crack they would always have been wondering what if. If we forget the past couple of blips in the record – the schooling incident being one- if you owned a horse of that class, would you not want to give it a go…?
Intrigued to see the next move…!
I think he had far more right to be in the line up than some of the 100/1 + outsiders.
Surely the connections of BOS should be in for a b*ll*cking too… the horse blatently doesnt act round cheltenham in march so why oh why do they keep dragging him over?
Liz (off the soapbox but mighty hungover with a very empty purse… which seemed to empty itself into the nearest bookies and members bar, dreading the thought of having to actually go to work tomorrow….)
Irish Stamp,
I am indeed going to Aintree, never been before but have been convinced to give it a try this year…

Haha! Wear the red carnation and I’ll be there to see it!
Ok, maybe we should have a forum social in the guiness village at 11.30 each morning – bearing in mind i’m new I think that should mean you’ll all have to buy me drinks!
I’ll be weaing a differnt thing most days – namely thermals (what an attractive thought), how can you recognise me? Well, i’m normally a slim (ish) size 8 who is vertically challenged (5ft2) however, with the amount of layers i’ll be wearing to keep the snow out I may resemble the michelean man ……
brrrrr its getting cold out there!

Gamble,
Don’t get a job, it’s really not the way forward – despite requiring the money to survive I’d rather be sitting at home on my arse watching the racing/exercising the horses!
I love your emails, wish I could write like that… but think I’d run out of things to say and end up babbling!
The self employment option is underway (http://www.affinityprintandpromotions.co.uk) but is taking more effort than ‘proper’ work!!!!!
To the rest of you… it’s nice to know i’m not the only strange person around obsessed with half ton of out of control animal charging around a track jumping ridiculously big obsticals – all in the name of fun. :o
Zome… the Pony thing made me giggle (with embarassment :) ) as I did the same thing on my 12.3hh welsh pony, hoike up the old stirrups and go charging round fields!!!!!!!! But the pony loved it… if only they had these pony racing series when I was growing up! She wasn’t the best steeplechaser or hurdler for that matter and much prefered refusing … I think our form figures would have read UR, UR, UR…….
Re Chelts on Wed, I am very odd too so that would be great, also very good at putting the world to rights but not so good with my tips……! :(
This time tomorrow I feel my pocket may be a fair bit lighter but i’ll be smiling a whole lot more (though that maybe a combination of the Vodka / guiness….)
Anyone out in Cheltenham on Friday night? I think it’s set to be a good party…!
Liz
Sorry! ;)
Didn’t mean to blank you but avoiding the beady eyes of the boss means I only get to glimpse at the forum… must have missed your first post.
Oh, and the question of my work… non horse related so very boring! (need to do something to fund the horses!) But if anyone has any jobs going near the glos area that would be fantastic.. out of a job in 3 weeks :o
Liz
Gamble,
Don’t really understand this comment….
"You seem to be intolerant of men that stand up to you,
and I very much hope this excludes your employer,
who must have the face of a donkey
or possibly a saint. ".
Didn’t think I’d been intollerent of anyone?
Confused.
Liz
Had me in fits of giggles with the donkey derby thing! I’m suprised with the class of a couple of these new races at Cheltenham they haven’t introduced one… or a shetland grand national! ;)
I’m hoping that a trip to the festival may turn one or two of my long suffering friends into mad racing fanatics!
Liz
I’m there for all 4 days if anyone wants to come and say hello/have a drink.
Last year we started every day at 11am as soon as we reached the course with a guiness in the good old guiness village!
