Some of the missing Gold Cup ones, and a couple of queries!!!!

Maj. H. P. Holt – ORANGE and BLACK hoops, BLACK slvs and cap
7/1 7 Ran1962
Balto
F. Palmer
Max Bonaventure
A. Reuff – PALE BLUE, RED hoop and cap
7/4 F 7 Ran1961
Pandofell
L. Piggott
F. Maxwell
Mr H. W. Daw – GREEN, WHITE cross belts, GREEN and BLACK qtd cap
100/8 10 Ran1953
Souepi
E. C. Elliott
G. Digby
Mr G. Digby – ROYAL BLUE, RED spots, slvs and cap
11/2 10 RanSorry – no help with 1947
I also have a discrepancy with "1951 PAN II E Constant white green hoop & armlets yellow cap" – I have WHITE GREEN hoopS, white slvs, YELLOW cap??
One other query – The Maharani of Baroda – 1948 Ruffs has – LIGHT TERRA-COTTA, CRIMSON chevrons and qtd cap (which agrees with B&H book), BUT, 1964 Ruffs has the POWDER BLUE, MAROON chevrons, sleeves and cap (with suffix of "Seethadivi")
I assume that these belong to different people but which one owned the 1952 winner? My sincerest apologies – Red Alligator colours were indeed PURPLe – must look up references rather than images!!
However, Mrs J B McGowan (Davy Lad) was indedd BROWN and CREAM check, BROWN slvs and cap (straight from 1977 gold cup card).
Incidentally, anyone know when Mr A Stanley Robinson (owner of Tied Cottage) changed his colours? They were black and yellow when Tied Cottage won the RSA chase in 1976 but were NAVY BLUE, MAROON cap by the gold cup of 1979?
RED ALIGATOR – ROYAL BLUE, EMERALD GREEN slvs, striped cap
Nicolaus Silver – LIGHT BLUE, PINK hoop and armlets, qtd cap
Anglo – ROYAL BLUE, white diamond, hooped cap, GOLD sleeves
Jay Trump – LIGHT BLUE, YELLOW cross belts, qtd cap
Team Spirit – YELLOW, RED, WHITE and BLUE striped sleeves, BLUE cap
Good luck Old Applejack
I agree with Ivanjica’s comments regarding the Paul Duboscq, they are the colours I have for him. Regarding Molvedo, the youtube video (albeit black and white) would tend to indicate NO body markings (the scene where they come back to the unsaddling enclosure) – so can we assume that was just RED, BLACK cap??
Incidentally, does anybody know the colours of "Harvey Cohen" owner of Balla Cove, winner of the Middle Park for Ron Boss in 1989?? I thinks this was probably the only horse he has had, and its the one I am missing from the Middle Park!
Have done most of the big jumps races, and Mr Barrow’s colours (Mr Smudge) were
Pale Blue, red diamond, quartered cap
Thanks VtC
you’re spot on with Buck House – have just found Miller Hill – Dark Blue, grey chevrons and slvs, dark blue armlets, dark blue cap;
Hartstown was actually owned by the McGowans (specifically J McGowan)who I believe also had Davy Lad – not sure if the colours were exactly the same though as Davy Lad was in Mrs McGowan’s name.
One’s I need now are:
Stranfield – D Devlin
Mac’s Chariot – Mr A Jordan
Noble Life – M Gallagher
King Pele – J Richardson (not Irish – trained by Gavin Pritchard Gordon)Thanks VtC, back to the Irish ones now then!!!!
Having found (most) colours for the championship race winners at Cheltenham – I thought I would investigate some of the other races, which is not quite so easy.
Particularly (all there will be more) the Supreme Novice’s – anybody any idea on the colours of Robert Leask, owner of Harry Hastings in 1985? I found a good print
http://www.harlequinfineart.co.uk/index … ion_Prints
but not sure which horse is Harry!! Racing Post confirms him to be bay, so presumably the yellow and red colours in the middle. Can anybody confirm? What is the cap configuration?
The Irish dominated this race in the early 80s (’77-’83 in fact) and I’m missing them as well!
Great stuff Ivanjica,
still not sure about Wilma Franklyn’s colours – Gold with gold braid? or maybe the french bit is old gold braid?
Think we’re still missing Molvedo 1961 and Oroso 1957 unless of course anyone knows different!!
Merry Christmas
BTW Ivanjica – where did you get the 70th anniversary magazine?
Not sure if it helps or hinders but,
Ernest Thornton-Smith was the owner of Chatelaine, and I believe was involved (owner?) of Fortnums. His colours as registered in Ruffs 1948 were:
LILAC, SCARLET belt (sash?), GOLD cap
Incidentally, there was (is?) a memorial dog race run at Bristol named after Mr Thornton-Smith
Interesting owner Michael Buckley and great memories of some of his better horses. Couple of others:
New York Rainbow – favourite for the Supreme Novices when Flown (Henderson’s other runner!) won
Brown Windsor – pretty sure he was part owner with Bill Shand-Kydd
Mutare – who i think won the Feltham Novices one boxing day and may have won the Sun Alliance but for a horrible fall
Not been the luckiest owner has he?
Regarding changing of colours, the most recent that I can remember was Sheikh Marwan Al Maktoum, who switched from the old "white, light blue chevron, striped cap" (Crimplene)to the current "red white epaulettes, halved slvs" but not sure exactly when.
I’m sure there must be plenty of others?
On a separate issue, does anybody have 1985 RSA chase racecard – or know the colours carried by Antarctic Bay (winner) owned by "P Meade" and trained in Ireland by Pat Hughes?
I think the Aga Khan’s registered 2nd cols and those used in practice are two different things! There was a race in Ireland recently
http://www.gg.com/racing/view.php/1952/ … 15658.html
where several variations of cap were used for his four runners, but no chocolate hoops in sight!
We love pedantic!!!
The history of the Aga Khan’s colours is fascinating, and I too have never really understood them.
As a generality, I have always thought:
– prior to 1957, the Aga Khan (3rd) had the green and chocolate hoops
– since then (4th) – Green red epaulettes
but this is not true, as the hoops were still the main colours well in to the 60s so when did the epaulettes come in?
it is further confused by Prince Aly Khan (son of 3rd but missed out on inheritance in favour of his son and who died in 1960) – Green , red sash
But of course this doesn’t fit with Isinglass’ observations. I do know that in Ruffs guide of 1925 (and again in 1948) – the hoops were the main colours and the second cols were the hoops but with a green cap.
One possibilty, the Begum Aga Khan (wife of) had cols registered in the 60s as Green, chocolate collar and cuffs, lavender cap.
Currently, second cols are listed as Green red sash, and the chocolate hoops as 3rd cols, although Kayhasi wore the hoops when winning the Derby (Doyoun carried the 1st cols) so again they must have changed in recent years.
Pedantic? no, confused!

I’m being ultra-pedantic here, but I reckon Mick Kinane wore a white cap on Commander in Chief in the 1993 Epsom Derby.Quite right – Commander in Chief (or more precisely Mick Kinane) did wear a white cap because Tenby (Pat Eddery) was favourite and wore the pink
Workforce carried a green cap because Bullet Train (Tom Queally) had the first colours (although peversely was marginally less fancied – 13/2 against 6/1)
Incidentally, when Quest for Fame won (in the pink cap!), Guy Harwood trained both Aromatic and Digression who had green and white colours at odds of 100/1 and 14/1 respectively.
According to the racing calendar supplement, GREEN is the official cap of the second colours, and has been since at least 2008, but some time since 1993 (Tenby)!
To quote Isinglass on 9th December last on this thread:
2000 / 1961 / Rockavon royal blue black slvs with white birds eye white cap
Do you have something different Ivanjica?
