‘…. I liked your tete-a-tete with the the young lady in the supermarket,….’
Not as much as I did, BigG….. holding onto the counter for support, I expect, and hoping she didn’t spot I’ve only got two front teeth at the top now – like Bugs Bunny! On a more serious note, lads, I’m gonna have to pack it in now, as I believe the Man Upstairs has not been pleased that I’m betting again.
We all follow different paths, and it’s no more a part of my vocation, it seems. I think it’s only because of the time I spend on it, and I have to say, He ends up always being right ! It was great fun to be part of this thread, and get the lowdown on past form of a lot of the big-priced golf bets, as well as the shorter-priced ones. Anyway, I’ve still got a few bets outstanding. I bet on Roge a while back, I think at 7s, so I didn’t bet on Nadal, though I probably should have, as well. A bit peed of about Rory, but I doubt it will have been the first disappointment for any of us !!! Good luck then lads. I might be tempted to see what you’re all up to with your bets from time to time. A quick glance….. (cough).
Thanks for the tip, Dazzler. We’ll probably see Nadal get injured now! But seriiously, on what you say, sounds like Nadal might be worth a punt.
Pleased Rory looks in good shape, but very, very disappointed Simona was beaten by an up-and-coming type. I had her in a double with Rory Mac and someone else who won last nicht at around evens.
Maybe she hadn’t fully recovered from her Wimbledon heroics. I think it often happens with these athletes that their body knows their it’s not back ‘up to scratch’ again, before their brain does. Sometimes, as they say in horse-racing, they’ve been ‘bottomed’ – by their epic efforts in a gruelling race and never fully recover.
Funny expression that; a bit like politicians, when they sometimes say so-and-so ‘has bottom’ or ‘a lot of bottom’, not commenting on their sexual persuasion, but on the general esteem in which they are held, kind of ‘status’. Something like that, I think.
I put a bit on Andreescu, Daz. I’m pretty sure it was you who tipped her with a write-up as, fortunately, is the custom of the four of you. Exciting to have all these irons in the fire, isn’t it ?
What time is the Wozniacki match, Daz? I’ll see if I can find it, anyway.
Well, BigG, Darren does seem a bit of a ‘one-off’ bookies’ bogeyman, doesn’t he? But the rest of you don’t seem far behind him, yerselves. Thanks for reminding me about Speith’s overdue promise, too. I did bet on him once, but had forgotten the reasons you gave.
I’ve done a short-priced treble 34/1 with Cori Gauff (won), Rory Mac and Simona Halep. I was very impressed by her look of very single-minded concentration, when she beat the Williams girl. Also, singles and a double with the last two.
So, as I mentioned earlier, I’ll be concentrating on the more fancied ones with a proven, consisently strong temperament under pressure. Relatively consistent, of course. (Van der Wheil’s ‘class’?) The transfer from Van der Wheil’s system for the horses seems to hold up quite well.
I wonder how many of you are old enough to remember him? Had a nice little chat with a girl serving in a supermarket the other week. She looked at me as if she thought she might have liked to get to know me a bit better, when I was 50 or 60 years younger (literally … 29 or 19!), if she’d been born, that is. Or her mother for that matter ! Anyway it gave me a buzz – as well as reminding me I’m no spring chicken – hence the query about any of you remembering the mighty Che Van der Wheil.
‘Belgium Knockout Guido Migliozzi 60/1
Wyndham Clasic J T Poston 90/1
US Open Gary Woodland 75/1’
– Raymo, a selection of wins of Raymo of this parish.… Apart from your 28/1, 20/1 and mere double figure wins of a lower order… and the 100/1+ places.
Bloody stroll on, Ray ! I should think you shouldn’t complain ! Well done, Matey.
Great stuff, Dazzler! Will The Mighty O’Reilly* go into quarter finals or semis or some other round, now ?
*Probably before your time, Dazzler, but I have it on good authoriy that he’s a cousin of The Mighty Quinn. Wonderful times for pop songs, the sixties, Daz – utterly crazy song-titles and lyrics. Would Wild Thang, John Daly, be playing with the Seniors now, or is he still ‘firing’ with the youngsters?
They knew how to write songs in my day, Dazz. When I werrre a lad, back in the mists of antiquity….. when Noah wre a lad for that, matter.
Strange you should ask that, BigG. I was in fact wonderng about a bet on Ashun Wu, in the light of him being fancied by some of you earlier, and performing pretty well. I’m more or less fully extended betswise at present, but I’ll have to have a little on him now.
It’s still some record you’ve clocked up, BigG ! I think Darren is an alien, masquerading as an ‘everyday’ punter.
Wow! 500/1 and able to bet for a place as well, Darren ! I thought I was lucky to a bet on Riley at 220/1, but no place betting put a bit of a damper on it. But I was tempted to bet on him, when I read about his stringing together a long series of aces. Now I wish I had. It reminds me of a funny anecdote of Bobby Riggs (surely, a tall story), relating to how he wore out strong server, Budge Patty, by lobbing the ball high in the air, getting him to smash back as many shots as he could.
Anyway, I’ve done a good few of your tips. You seem to speak particularly highly of Stephani in the Korn Thinngy, and Andreescu. I’m hoping the excitement of his recent, great win hasn’t unsettled Rory Mac, though for fear of that, he’s no price to write home about, is he.
Sorry for taking so long to reply, Uncle Dasbert, but I didn’t just wipe my reply once, but three times, perhaps more – I think through tiredness, hence my vagueness now. By the way, do you happen to know how much you have to bet to watch videos of the tennis of BF?
Thanks, raymo. I’m sure enjoying it.
I think maybe, for whatever reason, Rory had lost a little, but crucial, self-belief. I’m tickled pink with that and a little place bet on Burman at 35s – after an increasingly-painful series of losses. I really need some of my other bets on the tennis to win to be a bit more than a few pounds in pocket. But glad to have at least coverd my outlay.
Pleased to see my mentors have been winning place bets with long-shots, too, but I’m not sure, after your win odds of 66/1 and upwards, you won’t be pretty blase about those bets!!!
Very well done, BigG. What a wonderful position that is to be in.
For crying out loud, Ray ! Not you as well. I expect the three of you, you Gray and Dazzler, maybe Mom as well, will stop this thread to earn your keep from betting, full-time. And there was me, on the one hand, fuming that I had allowed myself to be sidetracked by another screen-subject on my pooter and missing the 16/1 winner of the Ebor (placed in a Group 3), tipped by a correspondent in the Guardian, which I had intended o bet on; and on the other hand, quietly pleased with myself for my near-miss – my moral victory which rewarded me with sweet Fanny Adams. (A nice girl mind you, and very proper).
Wow. Your bets ‘inventory’ is looking extra good isn’t it? I just hope Rory Mac wins. He doesn’t have to be doing handsprngs.
I forgot to mention, Daz, I put something on Dean Burman – I think he was a good price, considering his current position and his round of 62, although Donaldson on the same mark at -10 scored a round of 63. I also took your advice concerning Bianca Andreescu at 18/1, I think.
Yes, the 50/1 shot was Reily Opelka in the tennis (US Open), the big server. Just seen it in your opening post there.
I’m still fairly sweet on Simona Halep’s chances, though she’s a little tiddler (the Mighty Atom) compared to some of them, so presumably covering the court full pelt in high-power matches against the Amazons will be asking a lot again. But she looked so focuse and determined. Somehow, she must still enjoy the game, to have been so successful so far.
No. Fitz is only 1 shot doon, as you said, Daz. I thought I’d posted this hours ago!
Wow. You’re all at it again. Fitz is down a few strokes but look at Wu, Ormsby and Van Ruuyen. Was Burmester also one of someone’s tips ? I wish I’d done Schauffeler at 12s ; he’s now 6s. I didn’t have a penny on him this time. Pleased Supermac, Rory, is giving it stick at the top there. I’ll be pleased if he wins. I did Matusyama at 33s, and I think he could be ‘in with a shout’, with 2 days still to go, as it’s not yet ‘all over bar the shouting’, to homogenize the metaphor!
Can’t remember the 500/1 shot, now, Dazzler. It might even have been in the tennis ! Perhaps the lad with the mighty serve. I’m almost getting as much excitement out of the big-price wins and and places you lads are finding, as if they were my own. Maybe one day I’ll plck up the courage to do them, or a selection of them – but then, I fear it might put the mockers on them.
Early days, Dazzler, but Justin Hardin joint-leader, with one of your others, Fitzpatrick also ‘tops’ and in there swinging, it looks like you’re still ‘firng on all cylindes.
Had to laugh seeing how your tip, the said Fitzpatrick (who you deemed should have been clear favourite) had come in from 10s to 5/2 ! And then your 500/1 shot in to 150.
ROFL, BigG ! I bet I laughed more uncontrollably at the thought of your good lady wife giving you what for, for obsessing about the betting on holiday. Even on holiday! Such are the trials of the ‘calculated-risk taker’ – won’t say, ‘bettor’ and give the game away). I warned you about it, didn’t I… ?!? Tee hee tither tither, as they used to say in the Beano, Dandy, Knockout, etc, when I were a nipper (pronounced with that Yorkshire accent of the old boy in the Hovis advertisements). What a nice gloss those wins will have put on your holiday, anyway.
You lot are probably all too young to remember the Beano and Dandy. The Hovis ad for that matter!
