Thanks to the arrival of a second-hand copy of John Oaksey’s book on Mill Reef, I can now answer half of my question myself. The owner of Doo Call is listed as “Exors of Late W Caldicott”. but what were the colours?

    Many thanks, once again, Isinglass.
    Another question:
On his debut in 1970, Mill Reef beat Fireside Chat in the Salisbury Stakes. The third horse that day was Doo Call, trained by John Edwards (J A C) Edwards and ridden by a 5lb claimer called Pat Eddery, but who was the owner and what were the colours worn?

Many thanks for the info and also for the tips as to where to find it. Invaluable – there is life in the old thread yet!
Of course this encourages me to ask for more help …
I am doing some colour charts for Great Racehorses past and present, some short and sweet like Frankel and others a tribute to perserverance like Persian Punch.
Two others I have tried and so far can’t complete are:
Dayjur – what colours were worn by Tod (owner C A Fry) who beat him by a head in the Hue-Williams Stakes at Newbury?
User Friendly – any ideas for the colours worn by Potridee (owner L Grimm) to finish 3rd in the 1994 Beverley D Stakes at Arlington Park in which UF finished down the field?

    Many thanks.

    Hello all,
I need some help with the colours of winners and placed hoses in the Irish 2000 Guineas.

In 1999 the race was won by Saffron Walden but Mrs Magnier had 3 runners so which colours did his jockey wear?
Similarly in 2001, the 2nd (Mozart) and 3rd (Minardi) were both owned by Michael Tabor. Minardi appears to have worn the first choice colours, so what did Mozart’s jockey wear. In both cases I have a black and white photo in the Timeform annual, but can’t distinguish the colours, so am hoping someone has a racecard or other source.

Finally, in 1994 a 50/1 outsider, Guided Tour, finished 15 lengths second to Turtle Isalnd. He was owned by J A O’Gorman, but what colours did he wear?

VTC, many thanks for your offer of help.
I have done all the Cheltenham Races and the major Aintree races back to 2008 (using the SMARTFORM database).
Since that I have painstakingly had a go myself at Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup back to 2003.
Anything previous to this for Cheltenham & Aintree would therefore be great.
If we can get back beyond 2000 I think I’ll have to change the layout, because the standard Wikipedia display (images in a column down the right) would take up too much room – but no need to worry about that for now!

I have been uploading jockey silks images to Wikipedia for all the races of the Cheltenham Festival. These are displayed in a format showing the 1-2-3 in each year.

    e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champion_Hurdle

My data only goes back to 2008 so if anyone can help with 1-2-3 colours info for previous years then I would be very grateful.

    Ivanjica,
The Timeform Annual for 1961 (I unfortunately don’t have the 1962 Annual) shows Display as owned by Lady Granard, and the photo of her (Display not Lady G) winning the National Stakes at Sandown clearly shows (as much as a b&w photo ever can) the black with red stars and red cap that you would expect for this owner.

    Ivanjica,
I found the Pall Mall Gazette at Greg Way’s brilliant bookshop in Newmarket. Sadly it seems that the 1912 edition was the only one published.

    Laticsfan,
Thanks for posting the Grand National colours. I had seen snippets on this thread but never a comprehensive list.

I have converted to SVG graphics (IE9, Firefox, Chrome etc) at:

While researching colours for my site (http://www.jockeycolours.com) I have been puzzled by the change in orientation of the sash that must have occurred at some point in the last decades of the twentieth century.

In the B&H Colours Book published in 1973 a sash is inavariably shown going from the right shoulder to the left waist, but by 2004 when the (horrible) Cartier Colours book was published, sashes always go from the left shoulder to right waist.

My own memories of going racing since the early eighties suggest that a sash has always gone down and across from left to right, but this may be false as no doubt I didn’t think such things were important when I was so much younger!

Can anyone enlighten me as to when (and better still why) this change was made? I have asked Weatherbys (owners’ desk) and they suggested asking Allertons as they ahd been making colours throughout this period. In turn Allertons said (and it seems logical) that Weatherbys were the people to ask!

For an extra point, does anyone know when the name "sash" was introduced, as earlier records (e.g. Pall Mall Gazette Colours book of 1912) always refer to this as a "belt".

Calling all aficionados of owners’ colours, past and present.
I have posted racecards for tomorrow’s Channel 4 Races at http://www.eneconsulting.be/racecards
with brilliant, fully resizable coloured images. The best on the web!
Perfect for displaying full screen on your laptop/iPad while you watch the race unfold on TV.
You’ll know before the commentator who it is tucked in behind going better than everything else!
    Happy viewing.

Warning – these racecards use the latest HTML5 technology so can only be viewed with modern browsers such as Internet Explorer 9 and recent versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera.
