Away from Newmarket Freddie Head unleashed, at least to my eyes, a very nice Dubawi filly this afternoon at Maison-Lafitte in Ettisaal. Closely related to Tamayuz she was slowly away but soon got to close to the leaders and won very comfortably without in any way being extended. Clearly the result was not unexpected as she went off 2-1 favourite. Definitely one to look forward to next year.
I am sure that those more IT savvy than me will be able to download the race to the site.Toulifaut sold tonight at the pre Arc Horses in Training Sale for 1.8 million euros. Even more interesting now to see how she goes tomorrow.
What wonderful pictures of Frankel.
Is amazing the effect that he had/has on so many people. My elderly mother who is pretty close to being house-bound subscribes to both racing channels even though she does not bet and has had a huge amount of pleasure following Frankel’s offspring as they make their debuts on the racecourse.
Like any Sport, Racing needs its superstars & he certainly is one.
I think I right in saying that the great Brigadier Gerard was considered to have ordinary or at least ‘ unfashionable ‘ breeding.
Also wasn’t Treve unsold at the Yearling Sales with a pretty low reserve price?
Pedantry appears to be a bit of a feature of the Forum, so in keeping with it’s spirit I feel it is only right to point out to Steve that Holy Mafki’s jockey today was a lady rider and that therefore his references to Lee Marvin & the Milky Bar Kid are not really applicable.
With regard to the more serious subject of the race itself I agree with Steve that it looked a really nice performance by Toulifaut who has been brought along very steadily by Monsieur Rouget. The fact that the time was appreciably slower than Akihiro recorded I would guess is down in part to the fact that Toulifaut’s race was run in the early stages at a pace that looked funereal even by French standards.
Assuming that Toulifaut’s next race is the Marcel Boussac, we should get a much clearer indication of her ability then.
Surely in spite of all their big-race wins the biggest underachievers, by far, given the amount that they have invested are the Maktoum family?
Read an awful lot of Horse-Racing Books in my youth and one that I particularly enjoyed was ‘ The Barry Brogan Story ‘ by surprisingly enough, Barry Brogan. No idea how much of it was true but was certainly great fun.
I must confess that after a while I gave up on most Horse-Racing literature if for no other reason that in common with the vast majority of British Sporting Literature it was unbelievably bland. I don’t know if this down to our ridiculous libel laws but in comparison to American Sports writing most of the stuff that originates from here is to put it bluntly selling-class.
Whilst I would agree with many others who have already contributed that Mcilvanney stands out amongst his peers in the UK, I rather suspect that he has not got much competition as the best writers don’t tend to cover Sports in this country.
Many thanks
Will keep an eye out for him
Apologies, if this information has already been posted but have Coolmore got any Frankel 2 year olds in training?
I seem to recall, and I must confess I dont know whether is true or not, that there was a story that the mounted section of the Dubai Police Force was made up in part by very slow off-spring of Sadlers Wells. Got a feeling that quite a number of the Ballydoyle Galileo’s 3 year old colys this year might have similarly unglamorous future careers.
