Forget to mention that 23 fillies and 1 mare have won the Arc, first run in 1920………..seems they win the Leger and Arc more often due to it being Autumn.

Only 6 fillies have won the Epsom Derby, 7 have won the 2000 Guineas and 3 have won the Kentucky Derby. Very few seem to compete in these 3 classics to this day, although strangely 42 have won the St Leger, but only 7 since WW2. If there’s no gender disadvantage why don’t trainers/owners run them more?

I’ll second that — and not forgetting All Along, Sceptre and Shotover.

24th May, 1882. Shotover wins the Derby having already won the 2000 Guineas, the only filly to have done so.

Who remembers now that the festival used to stage selling hurdles…………and why not give the lower rung horses their moment of glory, after all they do run all year and are a part of NH racing. The conditions could be framed along a max rating say, and a bit like Irish rated jumps races give the higher rated a chance with extra weight above the rating ceiling. The purists wouldn’t like it for sure, but it would certainly be interesting and attract a few of the less able runners.

clive…..sorry if you’ve lost money over this. You say ‘Cards were attached to my account and cash withdrawn’——- Do you mean that the fraudster put his own card into your account and withdrew your money to his own card? Surely he/she would have needed your username and password to do this and these details should only be known by you.

Not quite like Michael Dickinson though with the first 5 in the ’83 Chelt Gold Cup.

Hi Kev, it is the Galway Summer Festival and a terrific 7 day meeting………..only 4 handicaps today out of 7 and I’m pretty sure they’ll throw up some useful winners later in conds races, as will the other races as well.

Judging by some of the 6 figure turnovers on Cl 5 or 6 novs/mdns on BF, I’m not totally sure of that. And Ireland seems to stage many lower grade non-h’caps with large fields, admittedly with only 26 race courses. Where I live I can’t access BF and trying to get a wager on with a bookmaker is almost as difficult as finding winners. Maybe the now defunct Horserace Totalisator Board should be replaced by an industry run betting exchange.

Ginger, point taken but quite a few punters prefer ‘less competitive smaller field maidens/novices’ — I know I certainly do and bookmakers don’t. And not all these races are won by the ‘obvious’ short priced hotpot as is commonly assumed.

Going back to my hypothetical race of all time (Brigadier Gerard v Enable v Frankel v Winx over 1m2f) I suppose a lot might depend on the time of year it was run as per colts v fillies. Fillies rarely run in, never mind win the 2000 or Derby in May/June. However the Arc in Oct is frequently won by them (6 of the last 10)and not forgetting the Leger, so it’s likely the boys would win early in the season and the girls would have a better chance in the Autumn.

BH…. I’m old enough (unfortunately?) to remember the Brigadier when he ran. If ever there was a horse racing Pegasus, it was he. A miler who won the King George V1 and only beaten once in 18 starts by a Derby winner (Roberto). The Brig was under the weather that day apparently and the standout thing about his career was that he beat exceptional horses who franked the form many times over.

Maybe I should have titled this post Brigadier Gerard v Enable v Frankel v Winx over 1m2f…… this would be the race of all time at the trip.

I think Brigadier Gerard would have given Frankel a close race over a mile.
