Society really doesn’t want middle aged blokes harking back to a mythical golden age of humour, and as a consequence engaging in a vengeful, deliberate backlash against decency and politeness by recreating the social conditions which allowed a racist like Bernard Manning to have a career in light entertainment.

    Yes

What we need is Russell Brand refering to George Bush as a "retarded cowboy".

Please dont tell me the future is Vic Reeves….please please please

Bernard Manning was technically a superb comedian. His timing was perfect, could adlib and was a complete couldntcareless *******. His pure race stuff didnt do much for me but plenty of other stuff made me laugh.

But is a race joke any worse than one that sends up the upper classes say? Or "chavs"? I suppose there is the element of what you can choose to be, but there is even a great deal of urban snobbery in the Alan Partridge programmes (which i did love). And are anti english/american jokes acceptable?

I think comedians in the recent past were a cut above current lot. Maybe because they worked tougher audiences rather than fawning "i will laugh if it kills me" students.

Richard Prior, Tommy Cooper, Dave Allen, Billy Connolly…

I’ve only got one jazz album. "Kind of Blue" which I purchased for er, special purposes some years back. Cracking album.

Described as Jazz Chamber music. Its a stunning recording and like true masterpieces, you never tire of listening to it. For many people, including me, it is the finest jazz album ever recorded. 50th anniversary of its release this year.

It always disappoints me that these people are clearly incredibly bright (perhaps less obvious is some),

or are they fairly bright but very ambitious and extremely diligent and disciplined?

The VERY bright tend not to be any of the above

Theres that much of it out there though that a nation of lads are going to expect their first encounter to be some sort of 4 on 1 gangbang, every hole’s a goal, face splattering cumfest (i believe that to be the terminology).

But isnt that what romance is all about?

Can you imagine an X Factor where the karaoke tasks involve replicating the guitar breaks of Jaco Pastorius, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Dave Gilmour, Steve Howe? What an alernative world that would be!

With wishing to blow your fantasies apart, the electric guitar is a long way down my list of fav instruments

Will admit that Gilmour and Mclaughlin have great subtlety

But i never find it an instrument that can be personalised in the way the sax is. I feel theres more scope and more soul with the sax and more versatility too.

    I agree.

Im not keen on him at all frankly. He has "positioned himself" (no laughing at the back please…) a little too skillfully for my liking on occasions

On another note, the more i listen to Vincent Cable, the more impressed i become

A bit biased because hes my local MP and (haviong me t him a couple of times) a lovely bloke to boot. But definately no ones fool…..

Without doubt the attacks on Al Quaeda in Pakistan and Afganistan have severely weakened their leadership at crucial times. There have been some great results

The toppling of the Taleban was essential too. If they had still been in place, there would have been a secure base for Bin laden and others to train and build their forces. Many British muslims went over there for indoctrination (although they claimed to be there for Stag parties and so on…). It was an intense breeding ground

No one can be absolutely certain what the situation would have been if we had (as the left wing muslim worshippers and the tothicktothinkitthrough brigade wanted) taken no action at all, but i believe that was not an option

newbury did of course stage diamond day for one year but half the usual diamond day crowd couldnt face going there.

I would suspect half the Ascot crowd feel the same with the new stand/layout.

Its a recurring theme but nothing baffles me more than the nostalgia for the dismal old Ascot grandstand and the tunnel to the parade ring. It was bloody awful

Since the viewing has been rectified, the new facilities are excellent

Jazz crosses with Soul and funk far more successfully than with rock. Mile Davis’s Bitches brew (and some other recordings) went down the rock route and Weather Report were successful enough

The very best exponents (although they were barely "rock" as such…thank god) were Steely Dan.

Although i barely ever listened to the godawful Yes, i do not recall anything remotely jazz about them. Jizz maybe

    I agree…

Unfortunately (as we have seen with the paranoid Ferguson) across all sports "rigourous interviewing" is often met with childish petulance.

A man in his position has a responsibility to promote the sport, so the ¨be nice to him or he wont tell us anything anymore¨ mantra is cobblers imo.

Thats OTT. Perhaps that point should be addressed at the Stoutes and Jonjo’s rather than PN?

No one is saying go easy on him and frankly there isnt a interviewer (bar Mccririck maybe) in the game who gives any trainer a hard time ever
