The first horse I backed here was Stratum. He oozes stamina and how could you not be impressed with his Newbury victory? I’d put a line through his Ebor run and he comes here fresh. I’m also another one here keen on the chances of Cleonte. He’s been put away after the Ascot victory and has Oisin Murphy on his back for the first time. Stars Over The Sea seemed overpriced at 28/1 to me. It seems that people just want to put a line through his win in the trial and therefore assume he can’t win off his current mark. I disagree, I feel he’s in the form of his life. Limini at 14/1 looks solid enough given her gutsy win last time out and could be anything on the flat over this trip. I think she’ll love the course. And lastly I’m on Here And Now at 25/1. I loved the way he went about things at York and will forgive his Chester run.

    Stratum 15/2
    Limini 14/1
    Cleonte 20/1
    Here And Now 25/1
    Stars Over The Sea 28/1

Hamada suffered an injury out in Australia and unfortunately had to be put down.

The four-year-old, who was prominent in the betting for the Melbourne Cup at a best-priced 16-1, fractured his near-hind fetlock during a routine piece of work.
“It was a freak accident and on the vet’s advice we did what was best for the horse,” said trainer Charlie Appleby.
“It’s very unfortunate, he had a bright future and a progressive profile. I was really looking forward to seeing him run.”

    Good evening,

I must get my picks for this weekend up now as I’m leaving for Longchamp early tomorrow morning and may not have any internet connection over the next few days. I hope that’s fine.

    Ascot 1.50 Muthmir
    Ascot 3.35 Flaming Spear
    Newmarket 3.15 Clemmie (Nap)

    Reserve Ascot 3.00 Limato

I’m more than happy to take on the market principles here. Laurens is as hard as they come but is more prone to being passed on the Rowley Mile than round tracks as the Guineas showed. Wind Chimes looks beatable on paper and I wasn’t overly impressed with Veracious at Sandown.

I think Clemmie has slowly been getting back to her best after a setback earlier in the year and the stable is now in much better form. I had another look at the Matron and she was given a sympathetic ride by Heffernan when running on late in the day to pass Magical for 3rd. Back at a track she’s won on I could see her form peaking. I’ve also backed Billesdon Brook on the basis that Ascot and Goodwood didn’t really play to her strengths. She’s overpriced on that Guineas form. A similar thought is that Happily looks overpriced as well. She was 3rd in two Guineas and was since handed the tough task of taking on Roaring Lion and Saxon Warrior in the Eclipse. She has a bit of a break before the Matron and I fully expect her to come on from that. She performed well last Autumn and we shouldn’t forget she was well backed for the 1000 Guineas back in the Spring. I Can Fly is one I’ve had a saver on. One of the top 3 may well win, but I don’t see anything bomb proof and with the form the O’Brien stable is in, I’m keen to have a proper crack at this race.

    Clemmie 7/1
    Billesdon Brook 14/1
    Happily 20/1 (each-way)
    I Can Fly 10/1 (saver)

I’m pretty confident that Battaash will bulldozer it again.

I’ll back him on course though.

From what I’ve seen over the past 3 weeks Kenya (14/1) is a better horse than many think and I have to be with him today on what for me seems a fair mark. I’m looking towards higher drawn horses and one of those who seems overpriced is Seniority (25/1) for a stable on fire. He’s looked like a decent animal throughout this year and I was impressed at Goodwood. I feel you can put a line through his York run after his injury sustained in the week and if he continues his progression he should run a cracker from his mark. Very Talented (16/1) could be very obvious but he ran a cracker in this race before and looks well trained for the race. I’ve also backed Tricorn (20/1) even though Pricewise has put him up. I think he’s ideal for this trip and seems to enjoy the course. He’s run very well in big field handicaps previously and represents a master trainer. I did feel at the last moment that it might not be foolish to have a bit on a lower drawn horse just in case I’m completely wrong with my draw conclusion. That one is Afaak (25/1) who has looked capable of winning a race like this all season and a repeat of his Hunt Cup run would see him go well. I’ve backed 5 but not to huge stakes and I think that’s more than fair to give myself a fighting chance. Best of luck everyone with this lotto.

I’m also on Aces for the another handicap plot by Mr Williams. I liked what I saw at Epsom and he has the soft ground form in France. Ice Age is drawn potentially badly but the 7 pound claim brings him into contention and goes in the mud. I also like Naadirr on his Spring form and Flying Persuit looks tailor made. Aces (14/1), Ice Age (22/1), Flying Persuit (12/1) and Naadirr (40/1).

A bit annoyed there, Royal Residence got trapped cantering behind horses for a very long time and with a clear run who knows what could have happened.

That’s part and parcel with these races though.

And I don’t think it really helped to solve the draw mystery for tomorrow.
