How sad this has made me – I remember this horse. What happened to him?
I was sad to see this and thought she merited a little bit more of a mention. The small report was easy to miss. More importantly, she seems to have had a good life.
Two fatal leg breaks. Only 6yrs old.
This was awful to see but not even mentioned in the RP. Unless I’ve missed it. It often seems to be the case that, if the horse is a big price, he doesn’t matter.
I can’t understand this. I’ve just checked on the RP and he’s there. He finished 9th in the 2.45 Pontefract on 17th September. That’s all it says on the RP. However, he was then found to be lame and was taken to an equine hospital where they tried, but failed, to save him. This is on Ruth Carr’s newsletter for October. Maybe you need to sign up for that, I don’t know. Regardless, he’s definitely listed when you put his name in on the RP website.
Yes he was a Ruth Carr horse. I’m sure she’ll have done a tribute on her website.
Nicky died.
Apparently she was to retire after this race.
Heartbreaking to read this. A game, beautiful honest little horse. Is it known where he spent his retirement? Did he have a good retirement?
That’s such a shame.
Absolutely devastated to see his name – reduced me to tears. An admirable horse. I didn’t even know he’d retired, although he hadn’t really completely I suppose if he was pointing. He was so reliable and such a good jumper – seemed to enjoy it. I so hope he was loved by the people close to him.
Has this been confirmed?
Oh no! This has upset me a lot. I emailed At The Races and they suggested he wasn’t fatally injured. He was only 6 and it was his 95th run – his name appeared so often. I’m really saddened by this.
No offence meant towards the yard at all as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been to the yard and the horses are well looked after. Much better than in lots of others I’ve been to. I didn’t make any comment about the yard in particular and I didn’t mean their horses in particular. I meant two year olds.
But my personal opinion is that I don’t like two year olds to race so much. I don’t like three year olds hurdling either. I think it’s too much physical stress on immature bodies. But that’s just my opinion and that’s all it is and I wouldn’t expect everyone to agree with me.
But it was a truly horrible incident to see.
Just checked – it was his ninth race. I don’t know – maybe he liked racing. But I never like two year olds to race so much – or at all if I’m honest. Seems a lot of stress on a body that isn’t physically mature.
Heard this on the radio earlier today. Breaks my heart that such a wonderful horse ended his life in, what sounds like, a long and painful death. Truly awful to think of his standing there in pain for such a long time.
Can’t help thinking that he could have had a lovely retirement instead of spending his last couple of years doing something that he didn’t – to me – look comfortable with.
For anyone who’s interested, David Pipe has put a lovely tribute to this old horse on his website.
