Fair enough Mick, you’re entitled to your opinion.

I think Rob hit the nail on the head with:

With the exception of a few amateurs, all jockeys can at least ride a competent race but, as in all jobs and walks of life, there are varying degrees of ability. ‘Twas ever thus and ’twill ever be so.

You could always make a fortune laying horses ridden by these incompetent jocks though!

A lot of ridiculous talk on this thread (imo, of course), much of it through the pocket:

XYZ should of (sic) won on that, ABC should of (sic) won on this….

I’ve never ridden in a race, but I’ve ridden enough fast work on the gallops to realise that it’s a

    very

difficult job, and nigh-on impossible to ride anything close to the perfect race each time. I appreciate the argument that jockeys are paid to do a job, etc., and that they should be accountable for their mistakes, but all sports have participants of different abilities – just factor it into your calculations when you’re having a bet.

I’d like to see micks54321 have a go at race-riding – perhaps he wouldn’t be so forthcoming with his criticism then.

He has always been a much bigger price on the exchanges Mark.

Probably because the bookmakers are accepting each way bets at their prices, and don’t want to offer more than say 7-2 the place (i.e 14-1 to win), whereas layers in the win market on Betfair don’t have to offer place terms and therefore have Master Minded going into bat for them.

Interesting comments chaps, thanks. In conclusion then, the two I’d ruled out have a great chance, the favourite I was keen to oppose has a great chance, and so does Doctor David.

Starting to think a watching brief might be best. I used to be good at working out these small field novice chases, but I’m beginning to wonder now….. :?

Clarkson is an unadulterated legend, and speaks out for many in this country who are fed up with the left-wing PC mafia who appear to run it.

    IMO, of course.

Brown is obviously a ******, btw, that doesn’t need pointing out to anyone with a brain.

Beat me to it The Dice Man – that’s exactly the point I was about to make:

All I’m saying is that value doesn’t lead to, or guarantee, profit. I don’t care whether a horse with a supposed (winning) chance of 20% is priced up at 7/2 if I’m willing to risk the intended stake for the potential reward.

I think the horse will win, so I’ll back it.

If you think it’s going to win, your assessment of its chances are likely to be greater than that implied by the odds (22.2%), so what you have, in fact, done is to identify value and back this judgement.

You’re the one arguing with yourself Equitrack, sorry old boy.

I heard today that Bristol City Council has run out of grit.

What do we pay these useless bureaucrats for, exactly?

I normally agree with you on most things Paul, but not on this. It’s only a bit of snow… Things don’t come to a standstill in places like Canada, Switzerland etc. for a bit of snow. It’s down to the individuals concerned to make a decision – trainers to travel horses, racegoers to attend.

I respect your decision to turn back, but others could still have a good day.

Good post Riverman, and one I’m inclined to agree with.

Kasbah Bliss looks the safest option at this stage, and the exploits of Punchestowns and Big Buck’s have made him a backable price.

Be assured that the 20 or so correspondences I’ve had from various arms of Weatherbys so far this week have all been absolutely meticulous in observing strictures of spelling and grammar, including all of those to have been created by the youngest members of staff. Professional integrity prevents any behaviour other than that.

As a former writer of some (minor) Weatherbys missives and publications, I can assure you that anything which left my printer was both grammatically correct and punctuated properly.

High standards did not rule throughout, however, but a fairly good job was done of ensuring that the people who wrote things are at least semi-literate, and that somebody fully literate proof-read the more important items.

FWIW, IMO, the greengrocers’ apostrophe should be a hanging offence. I also wholeheartedly applaud the actions of Lynne Truss, who once stood all day underneath a billboard advertising the film "Two Weeks Notice" with an apostrophe on a stick.

Does anyone know what the riding arrangements for the Gold Cup are likely to be?

Is Denman still Sam’s ride, or will Ruby get the choice as he’s stable no. 1?

If Ruby does have the choice, who will he pick? Not a straightforward decision by any means…..

    Gold Cup riding arrangements? Anybody?

Sometimes feel as though I’m talking to myself….

Contrary to the above opinions, I think Francome is good – I enjoy listening to him more than most on C4 (and more than anyone on BBC).

He might not know the form book inside out, but they have other members of the team for that. What he does provide is an insight into race-riding, tactics etc., and by doing so adds to the coverage, imo. He also adds a welcome element of humour (as does Thommo, but in his case we’re laughing at him)…

His tips might be useless (though he does come up with the odd outsider – throw enough darts and one’ll hit the bull), but if you’re relying on the telly for tips you shouldn’t really be punting.

As for his ability as a jockey, I’m surprised this is being called into question – a superb natural horseman.

His only minus point is that my wife fancies the pants off him….
