Back in the day, when I used to direct coverage of horse racing, the rule of thumb, based on sunset times, certainly in southern Britain, was that from 1 February, the last race could be at 5.00p.m., getting later as spring arrived.

That also had the effect of first race going off later too, at 2.00p.m., or later.
