Did anyone hear the news about Zenyatta? Seems she’s been back in work for some reason and rumour has it she may be kept in training.
Could be a simple reason behind her working. Could be she’s a bit hyper being dubbed up all day and scaring the boys who come to visit
Would appreciate any news because if she did come back it would be a Breeders next year well worth waiting for.
January 9, 2010 at 21:19 #269043There’s a lot of wild speculation right now, Shireffs hasn’t been saying whether or not she’ll be back. I have a feeling that they’re keeping their options open so if Rachel Alexandra gets Horse of the Year, Zenyatta can challenge her. Or they’ve been wooed by various teacks offering massive purses for a race featuring both RA and Z.
January 10, 2010 at 04:48 #269073About two weeks ago Zenyatta worked 4f in 50 seconds. According to John Shirreffs to "take the edge off" as she was getting a bit restless just hanging about in her stall and walking around the barn. On Jan 6 Zenyatta worked 4f in 48 seconds which is more of a serious race prep workout time. That started the rumors flying. Shirreffs comment this time was that Zenyatta didn’t have her regular excercise rider Steve Willard in the irons and the big Z-girl "went a little fast because she had a different rider on her".
Today, after winning the San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita with the Moss horse Neko Bay (at juicy 5-1 odds ), Jerry Moss was interviewed in the winners circle and asked about the rumors of a Zenyatta return to the races. Jerry Moss said that he hadn’t changed his thinking about her retirement but that they were keeping Zenyatta in California for awhile longer because it was really cold in Kentucky right now. He didn’t sound really adamant about it though. Hmmmm I wonder.
I don’t have a video of this but you can read about it on the BloodHorse.com site
January 10, 2010 at 05:41 #269074as others have stated, lots and lots of speculation here. her last three official workouts:
Zenyatta 01/06/2010 HOL Fast All Weathe 4.0 f 48.00 H 5
Zenyatta 12/21/2009 HOL Fast All Weathe 4.0 f 49.40 B 19
Zenyatta 12/07/2009 HOL Fast All Weathe 4.0 f 50.40 B 8she is seen galloping regularly and shirreffs said they have not changed her feed. all in all a rather unorthodox way of letting a thoroughbred down and one that has a lot of people at the track scratching their heads. add to that they said that they have not yet decided on a stallion to breed her to.
since rachel alexandra is still on holiday it’s doubtful they’re waiting on a race with her, who knows how long she’s out for. there is even a rumor that the z is nominated for the dubai world cup. all in all it’s been rather fun following all of this. i get her workout notices and will post if/when she works again.
i’m also of the opinion that they’re keeping their options open – she could retire, she could race again
January 10, 2010 at 23:59 #269224That would be AMAZING if she did run again.
Zip
January 11, 2010 at 00:58 #269228I sense it’s just a Z thing. She likes to work.
How I would LOVE for her to make a comeback and take on Rachel though.
