Hallo Dandy, Aldaniti both special for me. But I think Specify’s win is the first horse racing I ever remember thinking (age 8, nearly 9), now this looks an intersting carry on.
April 11, 2015 at 12:04 #8808991. 2004 and Amberleigh House for me, loved that horse and was roaring home without a bean on.
2. 1998 and Rhyme N Reason – Fantastic Winner, and a race full of incident.
3. 1994 and Miinnehoma – A proper old style Grand National…….if only Just So had got up.
4. 2001 and Red Marauder – What The National has always been about.
What made all those races so good, was the lack of fatalities, there’s been loads of other good ones, but sadly had a cloud hanging over them.
Can’t let these things go without mentioning the bad ones, and 1996 to 1999 was an awful period for the race, and 1996 was particularly bad. Less than 30 runners, the National must have close to 40 obviously or there’s no point having it, and a it had a field that resembled a poor quality Topham.
April 11, 2015 at 14:14 #8810541998 Earth Summit
For weeks before the race I was convinced the horse would win if the ground came up testing and told everyone I could about my views. After he jumped the first 6 fences I was sure he would win. I was very popular at work and with our company’s customers on the Monday morning!
Also had 40/1 each-way about St Mellion Fairway who came fourth, a horse I had identified as potential National material when he won a bumper at Newbury on his second outing.2001 Red Marauder’s win – compelling viewing
1965 Jay Trump – I was only 4 and a half at the time, but I picked three horses, Jay Trump, Freddie and Mr Jones and they came first, second and third.

April 11, 2015 at 14:50 #881139Everyone remembers Red Rum. I was a teenager at the time, very much into racing, and this was a fairytale come true.
Apart from that, the only one I really remember from when I was younger was Aldaniti. Another fairytale.
After that, they’re all special on the day, but none have been particularly memorable for me.April 11, 2015 at 14:53 #881140Definitely 2001 for me. Probably also my favourite race ever.
Earth Summit in 1998 a distant second for Suny Bay’s heroics under a huge weight.
