Is she? Coo, as you say great news!
A real tough cookie, that one, and along with Material World at a slightly higher level she was as reliable and honest a mare as there’s been in staying hurdles recently.
I presume Joe Fierro thought she’d gone as far as she could without non-existent respite from the handicapper? He’d be right, I think. What a standard-bearer for a tiny yard, though.
Think his bumper runner has a bit of a way to go to emulate Beth! Early days, though.

(graysonscolumn)Dear Beth was also getting to be a lady of a certain age so it was thought appropriate to retire her after a last hurrah at Aintree & get her in foal.
As for Just Chrissie, well, she came under the proper little madam category in the pre parade, and continued thereafter, didn’t want to know, pulled up after 2nd hurdle!! Think old Joe has his work cut out or maybe she just lacks maturity, we’ll see!! She’s started on the Quixall route already with my £2 down the drain!
November 15, 2007 at 21:23 #124968Ah yes, it was a hurdle not a bumper, wasn’t it! Inauspicious-sounding stuff either way.
Don’t suppose you asked after Silver Gift as well, did you? Not seen on a track for 16 months now – maybe she’s gone to the paddocks as well.

November 15, 2007 at 21:41 #124971MR DOW JONES!!!
November 15, 2007 at 21:47 #124974I see the Just Chrissie was out of Joe’s other excellent flag bearer Marsh Marigold.

Never entered my head to be honest Jeremy, so excited about Beth, but I have a vague recollection that when Joe was interviewed after one of Beths wins he spoke about losing Silver Gift, I know she was brought down in her last race but appeared to gallop away OK, next time I see them I’ll ask.
November 15, 2007 at 22:28 #124986Just Chrissie looked a little bit of a handful but no more to me – she was a bit on her toes and was tugging her lass around the ring a bit, the lass wasn’t best impressed! Seen [and dealt with!] far worse.

Ah yes, another bonny mare of yesteryear!
He likes his mares, he does.

November 16, 2007 at 18:22 #125107Sending Just Beth to Proclamation seems a bizarre move to me – what is the reasoning behind it do you know? Obviously they are wanting to add a bit of speed but sending a 3m hurdler to a 7f/miler seems a bit extreme to me! What type of animal are they hoping to get out of her? A very slow miler or a hurdler that doesn’t stay further than 1m4f?! (or as a friend is fonding of saying "something that goes slow for a very short distance"!) It’s got me knackered!!
February 9, 2008 at 17:03 #141667Hi – does anybody have Timeforms list of the top rated hurdlers and chasers ever?
February 9, 2008 at 17:08 #141668Taken from an article in the Guardian An so might not include them all
The best chasers
1 Arkle 212
Towered over his contemporaries in chasing’s golden era of the 1960s
2 Flyingbolt 210
The forgotten great, denied a chance to face Arkle because a stablemate
3 Mill House 191
England’s No1, unfortunate to bump into the incomparable Arkle
4 Desert Orchid 187
His will to win made him the most popular horse since Red Rum’s era
5 Dunkirk 186
Supreme two-miler, killed in the 1965 King George Chase which Arkle won
6= Moscow Flyer 184
Two-mile champion and joint-top chaser of the decade with Kauto Star
6= Burrough Hill Lad 184
Gold Cup hero and champion chaser for three seasons in the mid-1980s
6= Kauto Star 184
King George and Gold Cup winner with potential to reach the top five …
February 9, 2008 at 17:16 #141673I’ve only followed horse racing for a few years so it’s Kicking King for me. Kauto Star is a very close second on my list
February 9, 2008 at 17:29 #141677Cheers Martin. Any hurdlers?
February 9, 2008 at 17:35 #141679Not been able to find them as yet An – would expect that See You Then, Night Nurse, Monksfield, Sea Pigeon, Sir Ken etc. would fill the top few placings no idea of figures or in which order though
February 9, 2008 at 17:38 #141680Hi – does anybody have Timeforms list of the top rated hurdlers and chasers ever?
I wouldn’t give you a pound for them. I’d sooner trust a piranha with my finger (or worse) than I would trust a Timeform rating.
February 9, 2008 at 17:49 #141681I followed Best Mate since his early novice hurdle days and he’s very high on my list.
When I was a young lad, the two that stand out were Young Hustler and Garrison Savannah. Young Hustler could have been a genuine top class performer over many years had he been handled better. The former Sun Alliance winner ran 65 times over eight years and was finished by the age of nine.
Viking Flagship would probably top my list.
February 9, 2008 at 18:01 #141684Arkle, Persian War, Salmon Spray, What A Myth, Arcturus, Winter Rain, Bula, Border Incident, Rondetto, Summerville, Danoli, Dunkirk, Gay Trip, Aldaniti, Mr Frisk, Rough Quest, Aristo Treat, Abandonded Warrior, Rhyme n Reason, Little Polvier, Braw lad, Bel Canto, Fiddler on the Hoof, Tregarron, Highway Rambler, Sea Pigeon, Royal Epic, Half Free, Gembridge Jupiter, Bannow Rambler, Jodami, Brown Chamberlain, Pendil, Snowtown Boy, Bootlaces, Nick Dundee, The Dickler, Alverton, Forgive n Forget, Master Oats………….could go on for a week.
but my favourite horse of all is rapidly becoming Kauto Star if he wins the Gold Cup and becomes the first horse in history to win two Gold Cups and two King George’s back to back. Then the rest is que sera just want to see him go into the history books as one of the best of all time as he deserves it.
February 9, 2008 at 18:13 #141687Just a week Fist?
A mixed bag that you mention but interesting to see Highway Rambler in there (Canadius was pretty good too) and also Border Incident – he was a class horse. Aside from some of the other usual suspects, I used to like the USA imports – As a kid I backed Soothsayer E/W at 66/1 in Ten Up’s Gold Cup and later came Fort Devon – reportedly a vicious bugger – but a beautiful big Chestnut. It was interesting, too, when Derek Kent had some of the NZ horses – Grand Canyon was exciting and Navigation wasn’t bad either.
