Just wondering what everyone’s best bet is?
Something you can look back on thinking, that was rather dandy!
Mine would be Sariska/Sea the Stars ante post Oakes/Derby double last year
Jamie Spencer to win the 2008/9 winter all-weather jockeys championship. 12/1 when bookmakers didn’t realise he was going for it. Essentially a 3’s on chance because he was. Such a shame he didn’t win it!
50p lucky 15 at Hexham of all places back in 2007. Last 4 races on card

Mine would be Rooster Booster in the Champion Hurdle.
Immediately after the Greatwood win I thought he must have a 20% 4/1 chance of winning the big one. Some bookies went 8/1, one 10/1, but Stan James 12/1. I got on the phone straight away and had my usual sized bet. Thought bets like this don’t happen often, so picked the phone up again.
When my Timeform Perspective came they said the Greatwood performance was good enough to win 3 of the last 4 Champions. So could not resist a further wager with Laddies (by now top price of 8/1). Hosed up.Found out later it is/was Dave Nevison’s biggest single win too. Done at the same time, though somehow he got 14/1. Great minds eh!?
Value Is EverythingOne that got away, Six Perfections 16/1 1000 Guineas. Got cut off on the rail, had to come round all the field but could not get passed Russian Rhythem. Luck had it that this was the best quality field in many years, Soviet Song and Intercontinental etc. At the end of the year the French horse was rated 1 lb above the Chieveley Park filly.

I always remember Decoupage hacking up in the Tote Gold Trophy in 1999 as it was the first ‘proper’ bet I had had; as I was only 14 I had given £150 to my dad to put on at 6/1 and spent the majority of the race listening to football commentary on the radio as I couldn’t bare to watch.
My biggest bet, however, was on Penzance to win the Triumph Hurdle in 2005. I had convinced myself that he was a good thing after three effortless novice victories and just kept backing him and backing him. I ended up with a little over £1,200 on at prices between 9/1 and 12/1, as well as a £25 reverse forecast with Faasel.
I was still at university at the time; that night was an extremely good one!
Earth Summit 16/1 with a run at the beginning of National week before the rains came but with the weather forecast firmly in mind.

Have to go back a bit, to 1984, for my two most satisfying bets.
The Sporting Life ran a competition where people had to guess the weights that’d be allocated for the 1984 Lincoln (different system in those days). I spent days and days and more days working on it. When the result came out I hadn’t won, mainly as I’d allocated one particular horse something like a stone more than the handicapper had.
That horse…
…Saving Mercy, who duly obliged, even with my half a week’s wages acting as a 7lb penalty.
Later that summer I doubled up Secreto and Darshaan’s English and French Derby wins.
Little did I know it’d be downhill ever after.

Yellowstone 10/1Would have paid over £7K for a 50p lucky 15. Unfortunately I didn’t have them in the same bet. Blyhe Knight (11/2) also won for me that day. Luckily I didn’t do the Scoop 6 as I would have been the only 1 going for about £175K on the last race. Selection finished about 10th.
Won about £400 that day. Borderlescott was also touched off on the line by Green Manalishi costing me another £400
Most memorable one was backing Michael Stich to win Wimbledon in 1991.
I had read about his big serve and that he was a lively outsider that year and started backing him at 50/1. Whenever I was having a horse bet that summer I’d stick on a double with him as well so by the off he got me a fortune. The final was played on the day after my girlfriend’s sister got married- her parents were holding a "day after" barbeque in their house. I still remember about 20 people ending up in her parents’ bedroom watching it on a small telly (I was trying to be inconspicuous) and the huge buzz I got when he won. I bought a horse with the winnings (not a thoroughbred) but ended up giving it to the then ex-girlfriend when we broke up some time later.Difficult to single one out, but the type of bet that satisfies most is the one that jumps off the page, is value, and wins

Shaun Murphy at 125-1 when he won the World Snooker Championship in 2005 (could have got 150-1 if I had shopped around).
I knew he was a good young prospect and that he would never be that price again plus Peter Ebdon did me a massive favour by beating Ronnie O’Sullivan in the quarters.
Happy days never to be repeated.

My Dad loved a bet and I was allowed to bet from an early age (10 or 11) but that was 2x5p singles and a 5p double on a Saturday!!
The bet that gave me most satisfaction, was Maori Venture winning the National, not because I had that much on but because I’d just started my first job and told everyone there who’d listen to back it.

The two that spring to mind most were the ones that got away
EW Trixie on National Day 2000
Quadco who won the Bumper at 33-1, I’d been waiting for him to run for months, kept being declared and pulled out on the day of the race.
5-1 winner of the race before, can’t remember his name to save my life
The first of the three finished second, Mely Moss 2nd at 50-1 in The National, I’m just glad he wasn’t the last to run! If he’d won the bet would have been close to £250,000, still a good win but not the win of a lifetime which it would have been!Cheltenham 2008, Huge EW Yankee on Denman, Tidal Bay, Garde Champetre and Sizing Europe who went lame when looking all over the winner in The Champion Hurdle, crossed out Inglis Drever (won) from my short list of five on the Monday but would probably have left out Tidal Bay if I hadn’t.
Biggest winning bet/day? Going through the card at Kempton on Boxing Day 1979, Bird’s Nest and Silver Buck were amongst the winners. I’d had a golden spell in December and had gone to the track with pockets bugling and confidence on a real high, I’ve long since accepted it’ll probably never happen again
