Don’t think so on Don Poli’s performance yesterday, but I haven’t seen Coneygree running much so comparisons are difficult.

Kudos BlackGold for venturing an opinion.

I think it is safe to say that, even with Don Poli, the RSA was the easier assignment but the ground may have come more in Coneygree’s favour today.

Well, guess now we know. Although it’s difficult to say Coneygree would have beaten Don Poli. Until they run against each other, it’s pure speculation really. Still, a couple of new stars for the future to enjoy watching.

Well I’m gutted for one. I backed him for the RSA at 5/1 but didn’t fancy him in the Gold Cup. I thought he had to have beaten Houblon Des Obeaux by far more than he did last time and it turned out that he has done so by so much more today.

Well done to his fans and the team behind him.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Would Don Poli have won today’s Gold Cup ?

    Think it would’ve been close.

Is Don Poli’s form as good as Coneygree? NO, not yet.
But Don Poli is yet to run against established chasers and style of running (lazy) means we don’t know how much he had in hand of the RSA field. I have no doubt he’d have given Coneygree a race today.

imo Don Poli has bags of potential to improve next year.

Will Don Poli beat Coneygree in next year’s Gold Cup if both are in top form? imo YES.

Let’s not go over the top about Don Poli? It could hardly be considered a vintage RSA and in my view he’d still fall into the could be anything category.

I believe Coneygree would have led Don Poli a much merrier dance from the front than The Young Master and Kings Palace, in turn, did in the RSA.

The Young Master folded like a concertina, and Kings Palace made a blunder 4 from home that came as the others were starting to get to him. He was quite disappointing in the way he dropped back in the closing stages.

In Coneygree we saw a horse who sustained his effort all the way through a Gold Cup trip and I think it would have been a whole different ball game for Don Poli to have coped with that this year. My own suspicion is that he wouldn’t have placed in this years Gold Cup race.

In Don Poli’s favour is the fact that he’s got youth and scope on his side. He won the RSA with a fair bit in hand on the visual evidence and with another year under his belt it is not hard to envisage him doing something similar to Djakadam in this year’s race, ie being one of the very few to come through and actually throw down a challenge to Coneygree late on.

I have heard various opinions on the quality of this year’s Gold Cup. Some people are obviously excited and hailing Coneygree as the greatest thing in a long time. Others have said he’s just taken advantage of a fairly poor renewal of the race.

Perhaps some of the reasons for the latter view is the presence of Djakadam and Road To Riches in 2nd and 3rd places. Along with the winner Coneygree, they form a 1-2-3 that even Mystic Meg would not have put up at the start of the season.

Last season we saw an unlikely 1-2-3 but I think that was a freak dividend and I think this year’s trio were one’s that there was plenty of money for in the approach to the race, as the serious punters wired into the fact that the horses were serious contenders despite having started the season pretty much unconsidered.

Djakadam will now get a rating much more in keeping with his true ability and Road To Riches has shown that his J N Wines and Lexus wins were by no means just the taking advantage of lack of fitness and poor efforts on the ground from the Boston Bobs and Bobs Worths of the game, for example.

With a horse like Coneygree, who wins his races in the all-or-nothing style, you always wonder if the tank will empty at some stage. I hope he keeps well and lines up in similar form next season. Don Poli has to be a serious contender with progression more than likely and it would be a fascinating clash if it happens.

In the midst of all this is the fact that the bookies don’t seem to have a clue at the moment, with odds varying wildly across the boards.

With Vautour an uncertain contender for now and Don Poli looking awfully short, you need to ponder Coneygree’s chances of staying healthy and getting the ground again.

Above all of this seems a total disregard for this year’s placed horses. Both of them have some scope left and Djakadam in particular at only 6 years old. Ruby had a face like fizz after the race and you really felt they thought they might win that one. The horse clearly wasn’t right in the Hennessey and he’s just gone close to lifting the Gold Cup as a “nipper” I’ve got to recommend the horse at 16/1 for next year as better value than some. Likewise Road To Riches seems overpriced at 25/1, having looked the most serious challenger to the winner for much of the race.

I think Coneygree would have beaten Don Poli in the RSA but it’s a tricky one to call for next season and I wouldn’t be taking the 6/1 prices and lower.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Only doubt is down to the difference in going but on soft Coneygree would have absolutely mullered Don Poli!!!

The RSA was a weak race IMO; Southfield Theatre would have made more of a race of it but for a stopping blunder at the ditch followed by an awkward jump at the next. I’d have Don Poli as an average RSA winner at the moment :-) King’s Palace was never going to get up the hill in a strongly run race – watch last year’s Albert Bartlett! The Young Master, Adriana and If in Doubt are handicappers. Wounded Warrior wouldn’t have been out of place in the 4 miler. Best of a poor lot!

Now Vautour, that might be a different matter!
