It’s not a tipping column as such, but Ed Walker’s column in the Weekender makes me wonder how he can be having an apparently decent season when he seems to have absolutely no idea of how his horses are going to run?
Today’s column seemed positive for both Felicitas and Hackpen Hill at Salisbury and the first was a very poor almost favourite while the latter should have been declared a non runner. It’s by no means the first time I’ve been suckered into supporting one of his tips but it will certainly be the last!
I know jockeys are notoriously bad tipsters but I’d previously thought that trainers might have something of an inside line!
Any suggested contenders?August 12, 2026 at 22:01 #1773261I know it’s a bugbear of people on tje betfair forum. But “Get it ready” By richard birch in the RFO is cringeworthy.
He seemingly manages to get hundreds of pounds on with just about every bookie going and claims to have won thousands every week.
Read his tips for the upcoming races on the racing post website though and the bloke is shockingly bad at finding winners!

One second away from the RixYonks ago as an innocent pedestrian – an impecunious yoof to
boot – without the scratch (americanisnm) for a yucky Reliant Robin or a bent Arthur Daley reject I happenchanced upon a well known luvvy in a suit and red open 😺 topped sports car halted at a red light.
Inglorious b*””***.
I stared unremittingly for 45 seconds and then shouted,” Hey Brian you don’t look so funny with yer troosers on ”
First gear on green seemed a bit over the top – he pushed it – but my early days in prison school as a junior disciple of De Sade the head stitched on backwards design artist made hapless Brian virtual mincemeat.
Now we move on to Henry Ricks who in my opinion and forgetting the odd rick, was in another county compared to the other hacks and pundits – not that ever in my entire life have I ever followed a tipster. Why didn’t he name change to Rix ?My concern with racing at the moment is the paucity of palfries in a race race I repeat the word race, as a four runner doesn’t hack it. Scarcity of runners not only devalues the form but also attendance. I have adjusted my model to deal with it but I shouldn’t really have to.
A table top tipster has posted 30% ROI to a 100 selections to SP. Respect for that but I can guarantee that will decline by 200.
S.P. is the only true barometer – I have never diverged from it.The Lone Ranger ” He’s Champion – he’s Champion the Wonder Horse
Tonto … “What about me” ?
August 13, 2026 at 08:05 #1773264I used to see Birch quite a lot at Wimbledon greyhounds. I don’t believe he bets for anywhere near that amount of money.
August 13, 2026 at 09:32 #1773270The guy is an absolute throbber, CAS.
All of these people putting up selections in print or digital media should be made to put them up before the race. And there ROI’s would then be easily available.
There can be no credibility to any of them until that happens.
August 13, 2026 at 16:23 #1773277Maddy Playle, what is she doing there? Imo, just too young to understand the game and the trends involved….
August 14, 2026 at 10:10 #1773308Paucity of palfries or should it be palfreys ? Enjoyed that one Gamble. Mounts suitable for those lovely ‘jockettes’ I suppose.
I haven’t noticed how Richard Birch does at the day to day tipping but his long term suggestions in old RFO annuals were desperately bad. Hapless things like Don Poli and Cocktails At Dawn being a couple of headliners.
August 14, 2026 at 10:25 #1773309Tipsters are no different to us they just get paid for it. I often have a gander to see if they coincide with me but that’s about it.
The more I know the less I understand.
August 14, 2026 at 13:08 #1773314Birch used to write his “Get It Ready” column in the Saturday edition of the “Racing Post”. He made his reputation (such as it was) when he tipped Monty’s Pass to win the Grand National and his other three selections that day all won as well. That was enough for the Post to hail him as a genius, rather like when Tom Segal got on a winning run for Pricewise around the same time.
I always used to laugh when Birch would write stuff like “shovel it on” and then I would see him later that night at Wimbledon handing over only a note or two to the bookmaker.
August 14, 2026 at 18:44 #1773333If I was to find a method of picking winners reliably enough to make a profit, why would I tell anybody? I certainly wouldn’t be plastering my selections all over the national press.
