Wolverhamton 11.10.2014:
The Tapeta surface was again riding super quick at
+0.36s/f
(standard to fast).
There were two notable performances,
Random
in the first (5.50) making his handicap début suddenly improved
23lbs
to take this, he is in the declarations to run on the 17th.
In the 6.50
Encore D’or
ran away with the 1st Div of the 2yo maiden to set the top speed figure at the meeting of
69
(no WFA), it looks like
Ralph Beckett
has a pattern horse on his hands
The horse I mentioned earlier
Dazeen
is entered in at Wolverhampton next Friday , it’s simply a case of striking while the iron is hot.

October 12, 2014 at 17:09 #492167Blues Bros, How did you get a faster figure for Random than Encore D’Or? The time for Random was 73.77 & EncoreD’or was 73.24.
October 12, 2014 at 17:37 #492168I thought some places had stopped using Tapeta? I did wonder about taking out shares in it
when it was first mentioned.
Santa Anita tried Tapeta for the Breeders Cup in 2008 and 2009. Europeans had their best results and Santa Anita promptly reverted to dirt with US breeders complaining the Tapeta had upended their bloodlines.
(will be interesting to see what happens this year now that a lower-tier but enterprising HK trainer has taken a good but not great horse – Rich Tapestry – from the Sha Tin dirt training track to a US dirt Group 1 win – trainer’s first G1 anywhere and HK’s first in the US. though the horse is by Holy Roman Emperor and a Dermot Weld cast-off after not fulfilling middle-distance expectations.)
Meydan was built with Tapeta, opening March 2010. US horses stayed away, and it too has now been torn up in favour of dirt.
I’m pretty sure they never had Tapeta at Santa Anita. They were initially sold something called CushionTrack but had drainage problems. They brought in an Australian firm who produced another surface called Pro-Ride and added that to the mix, but the local trainers didn’t take to that either after another mauling in the Breeders’ Cup and pretty much forced the track to put dirt back down.
The Tapeta at Meydan wasn’t really Tapeta by the end either, as they had mixed so much extra stuff into it to try to get it to bind in the high temperatures. If you look at past World Cups on YouTube, you can see that it started out as a mid-brown colour and ended up nearly black. It was horrible to even walk on, really sticky and unpleasant, and some (many?) horses just couldn’t act on it at all.
October 12, 2014 at 17:40 #492169FWIW, I can’t help thinking that the person who sold CushionTrack to Santa Anita was more than a little like the guy who sold the monorail to Springfield
October 12, 2014 at 19:03 #492173well done Blues brother …a lot of hard work to come up with these numbers …it will be interesting to see how the Tapeta reacts to a cold snap …or indeed 2 / 4 weeks of persistent rain
well done Sir

I didn’t put up a speed figure for
Random
, only his improvement of what he had achieved so far.

Quite right – I should have checked the wikipedia page on this, which has a lot of interesting links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic … rse_racing
for Meydan, Sh Hamdan clearly was not happy with it while Michael Dickinson seemed to be predicting back-to-the-future:

then came the announcement:

The tapeta was still riding on the quick side, and the best performance on the clock last night was in the 6.30 where I had
Steelriver
running
7lb
above his handicap mark and he should follow up, the favourite
Plucky Dip
was unluckly to have bumped into an improver and should make amends next time.

October 16, 2014 at 11:37 #492479I’m still getting all on the Tapeta surface faster, except the 2m119y distance (203.55 to 201.52 seconds, from three runs) They are settling down though.
Going coefficients are still almost identical.

Going allowance
+0.28s/f

When it came to working out the going allowance for last nights meeting, there was a major issue, the majority of the races were run at a crawl on a quick surface.
The problem you have here, if you don’t make the correct adjustments, you end up giving the 2yo’s speed figures that are
15lb
higher than their current ability.

I wrote my program, under Davey’s direction, in 1994 in DOS and converted to Windows as soon as it arrived. We typed the data in manually in those days. An hour and a half, every day!
When Davey disappeared to Ireland, one of my customers helped find a source for the results and declarations data and have updated it with each version of Windows since.
I had The Solidus book reprinted a few years ago. I contacted the printers in Ipswich. They hadn’t been paid for the plates and the printing and wouldn’t let me have them! I scanned mine and had it printed locally.
All the coefficients in the book are way out of date now but the general method is sound.December 13, 2014 at 21:43 #498420Any thoughts on the surface lately, Blues Brother.
My stats and data are very confused by this Tapeta so far.

Last night’s meeting I had the going allowance at
+0.46s/f
(standard to fast).
The tapeta surface is considerably quicker than the original polytrack
surface before they mixed it in together with Fibresand to help cure the kickback, which we now know didn’t work, all it did was slow the surface down. The tapeta surface at
Wolverhampton
is the fastest AW surface in the British Isles including
Dundalk
.
The confusing thing about the tapeta surface, when they had it down at
Meydan
it always rode around
-0.05s/f
(standard), possibly the depth was different.
Mike.
December 14, 2014 at 11:51 #498438There’s one particular trip which causes me problems using the RP Standard Times…..it’s the 16.5 furlong trip which thankfully they don’t race over very often
On 6th December I had a 56 rated horse running a raw figure of 105 which was ridiculous……he’d be a Listed horse on that reckoning !
I then noticed that the new standard time for that trip was 2 seconds slower than the standard time for the old surface. And as the new surface is quicker horses were slamming the new standard time……which if anything should be 2 seconds faster than the previous time not 2 seconds slower !
The racing post even noted it……
"A moderate contest but a strong pace saw another track record go, the time significantly faster than the 11 previous races at this distance on the Tapeta and also a good bit quicker than any horse managed on the previous surface."
I assume it will work itself out as they refine the times with more racing…….
