    No, nor for anyone else.

I cannot understand why this annual cringefest of embarrassment creates such intense interest among those of a nerdy persuasion.

Tell me about the top-class Europeans (not UK or Ireland) he competes against regularly ?

How does he get on against the best from Africa ?

Is he still the best when up against jocks from Asia ?

Is he still the man when riding against his American colleagues ?

Surely those other sportsmen and women who participate in sports with greater competition are more deserving of the award?

No, and obvisouly its not a personality award or ryan giggs could not of won nor the the great but arrogant AP be favourite this year. Award needs to be renamed to achiever of the year cause most guys on list such as phil taylor are all assholes IMO.

    That’s hard to deny.

But I’ll be voting for Phil Taylor. Whether AP is the best in the business is a matter of debate, Phil Taylor is the best in his business without question.

Oh what, just because he doesn’t race in Africa, Asia or America his achievements are meaningless.

Would you rather AP McCoy won the Pakistan grand national then going to win the ghanian gold cup the following week, would that make him more special to you, would that make him a proper champ mate, would it? oh god, he’d be a real star then im telling ya, he has missed out on the Ghanian and Pakistan market here but still young enough to go there and become the complete jockey and fullfil those missing life ambitions that seperates him from the average.

Jesus Christ all ******* mighty, i’ve heard it all now!

It’s clear that you’re suffering from sort of debilitating condition at the moment Mr Wilson. Nothing trivial I hope.

If you’re unable to understand the argument I’m putting forward then that’s my mistake in assuming your IQ is greater than the number of summers you’ve graced our planet.

Probably won’t watch it [find it cringeworthy these days] or vote, but if I do I’m tempted to vote for Lee Westwood. Not in the slightest bit interested in golf, but whenever I’ve seen and heard him on the telly I’ve been bowled over by his charm and personality. A master of his craft and a nice bloke. I’ve never warmed to McCoy and I can’t be two faced. Sorry.

I’ve made a complete pest of myself in the past fortnight. The grocer, the girls at the Co-op, my barber, people I pass in the street, the mechanic at the garage, the guys in the bookmakers, family, friends, even enemies. One message from the pest.

    Vote McCoy.

Now, I can never get his winners and he’s cost me a fortune by beating my well chosen plots, but he’s horse racing and that counts for a lot.

The opposition is poor too: the homely, Grandad-like Taylor is a darter and I struggle to take that pastime seriously after London Fields. And it’s not even a proper sport. Westwood’s okay but golf is like watching a biker having his haircut with tweezers. Someone from athletics? Nah. I wouldn’t trust an athlete to find the toilet in their own house without intensive coaching. And who watched the Delhi games? Not even the athletes themselves.

I don’t know any of the others. What does McDowall do. Is he any relation to the giant-eared "Planet of the Apes" actor? I’d vote for him if he was and no mistake.

Anyway. If McCoy wins, I’ll take great and abiding pleasure in sticking it right up the Transmetropolitan Tobys at Shepherd’s Bush who – I kid ye not – would see the back of this magnificent sport completely if they could get away with it.

C’mon Tony. We’re voting for you. Go Tony!!!! :D

Probably not, as I don’t normally see the point.

One thing that is slightly different this year though is the absence of a clash with the X Factor final. On balance I would say this is bad news for AP as it probably means more voters so the racing vote will be diluted. Also it probably moves us to a younger SPOTY demographic than last year’s voters. I would guess younger people are less inclined to vote for somebody who whips horses than older people. On the other hand the younger viewers might have fewer preconceived voting intentions and be more swayed by the coverage on the night. This could work in AP’s favour as I have no doubt at least one pundit on the programme will tell viewers that McCoy is the most deserving.

Blimey – I was expecting a landslide vote THE OTHER WAY!

I have to agree though that Phil Taylor’s achievements are pretty spectacular. Whether you consider darts a bona-fide sport or merely a game (and if darts is only a game then golf could arguably be categorised similarly) it could be argued that, in terms of competition, darts has plenty depth and there are not many sports where people have been World Champion 15 times and probably more to come. He is that rare thing – someone who utterly and completely dominates their sport and is a class apart. Hard to argue that AP is a class apart from the likes of Walsh or Geraghty.

Westwood is a British number 1 in another very competitive sport but he lacks the big prize win this year you normally need to take this. McDowell has achieved loads this golf year but lacks the public profile so our fellow has a shot – I’ll be voting for AP, not for McCoy himself necessarily but more for racing in general.

This is such a surprising result.

So, if we racing folk aren’t voting for AP and are already dusting off the

    "it’s a stupid contest anyway"

    excuses, who

    is

going to vote for him? People outside of racing?

Last I heard, AP was close to even money for SPOTY. Lay of the year?

Yes – because all true racing fans should – and more importantly, because he thoroughly deserves to be awarded and publicly recognised for his outstanding achievements within National Hunt horse-racing. To win fifteen jockeys championships in a row is a truly remarkable feat.

He should have won this long before now. I sincerely hope the British public finally do the right thing and give AP McCoy the one accolade he is long overdue.

It will give the sport of horse-racing a much needed shot in the arm, and it might just persuade the BBC bigwigs to televise more racing on the national channel.
