Fergus Shanahan this week in The Sun provided a possible reason why John Mc Crirrick has had his appearances on The Morning Line reduced to just 4 more until October.
Andrew Thompson the C4 head of sport gave the reason as he was too popular and was denying the lime-light to others. Nothing about how he might be no good or past his sell by date.
Mc Crirrick has been used to by Big Brother and other daytime television shows in need of his shock jockery.
He was thrown off the Alan Titchmarsh show for saying Ingrid Tarrant (former wife of Chris Tarrant) was useless in bed. He was also thrown off another day time television show for playing up to his role as a pantomine women baiter.
Shanahan reports however Andrew Thompson is married to ‘right on’ supporter of women’s rights Alison Sharman the boss of daytime television at I.T.V.
Shanahan wrote ‘Far be it from me to suggest Ms Sharman has been whispering in her hubby’s ear about getting rid of that fat chauvanist pig John Mc Crirrick but if she had, would’nt it be terrible hypocrisy since he was invited on her daytime ITV shows purely to perform as the politically incorrect stage baddie?’
May 9, 2008 at 09:10 #162417I don’t really care about the details leading to the cuts in his appearances.
I do care about how is is wheeled out as the voice of racing and gambling when the lazy media editors need a sound bite.
May 9, 2008 at 10:46 #162442Report in the Daily Mail the other day suggests Thompson is moving to RUK, which could pave the way for Big Mac to be reinstated.
May 9, 2008 at 11:02 #162449Thompson for RUK surely not. I thought the RUK management cared about the quality of their output?
May 9, 2008 at 11:06 #162451According to Charlie Sale, he’s a strong candidate for the vacated Chief Executive Job.
May 9, 2008 at 11:06 #162452Not on the basis that they have had Oliver Bell and Anthony Kemp in the studio for the last two days.
Bluffers both.

May 9, 2008 at 11:58 #162470Private Eye printed the Alison Sharman theory about 3 weeks ago, not sure if that gives it more or less credence. Nice to see The Sun has it’s finger on the pulse!

The reason he is wheeled out is because he is one of the few racing journalists who engage in what might be considered, outside of the racing circus, genuine journalism.
He earned his stripes with the totegate exposure and was the only one speaking out against the Modernisation of Racing document.
May 9, 2008 at 15:03 #162503Only conspirocy i can think of regarding Big Mac is that in an old Haydock racecard which i have it featured an interview with Tanya Stevenson and one of the questions along with the usual things like fave course, meal and music was who are your best friends in racing.
Tanya answerd for one of them Kerry Lee who is sister of Tom and whose father is the guy who traines MacGeorge but i forget is name.
It is daft axing him for 18 Sats but then again i cant see Tom Lee or Nick Luck going on CBB
May 9, 2008 at 15:17 #162505I suppose I could say he deserves the chop for being a betting expert who has never explained (to the ordinary punter) the importance of the table of odds and chances.
For anyone who did not read the relevant thread (appologies fto those that did).
I believe any betting expert who does not explain the importance and significance of said table is effectively putting away punters. In just the same way as McCrirrick says bookies are with SP’s etc.But if I did say that, I’d get shot down again by the value means nothing brigade, so I won’t.

May 9, 2008 at 17:23 #162524If they replaced him with someone i’d enjoy watching and has the knowledge needed then fair enough but it’ll be the likes of Nick Luck and Tom Lee. I mean, i don’t dislike them just i’d rather watch McCririck. and to be fair he does know his stuff. I just think he makes the show that bit more interesting, different to the bbc and racing channels.
Have to say have missed Tommo recently on C4 racing also, please don’t say he’s being made a part timer too. Again: Mike Cattermole, Alice Plunket, Emma spencer or Tommo… please give me Tommo anyday. He brings that something to the show. Makes it much more interesting.
Be a sad day to see the ‘second string’ of presenters take over the show. Much duller
May 9, 2008 at 19:12 #162529Thanks for the name recap GC, Macgeorge he was a lovely horse.
Agree with Kauto, at somepoint Big Mac will be replaced as he is not far from 70 now but he is still enthusiastic and loves his job and as has been mentioned before his Monday night banter with Barry Dennis at Windsor always maked good viewing plus his form knowledge is second to none.
For me when the time does come i think that Matt Chapman would be ideal to replace him as he has his serious and wacky sided to his character and would be popular in the betting ring.
May 9, 2008 at 19:23 #162532The sound of wrists being slashed all across the nation of racing viewers!

Can’t believe that anyone would even think that, let alone express it on a leading racing forum.
Have you been drinking, Neil?
May 9, 2008 at 21:47 #162545I am amazed at this thread.
Still, it explains how this could happen…
May 9, 2008 at 22:41 #162548Eight years of Ken Livingstone in large part explains how that happened.
