Well, I am watching Emma Spencer and Andrew Barr at Newmarket, I have the mute button employed and I am wondering what Mrs. Spencer brings to racing coverage.
Effing unbelieveably useless!

July 20, 2007 at 19:50 #108683Indeed Colin. The RUK ‘reserve side’ tonight for sure.
While alot of ATR annoys me, if it were to go the wall and RUK was the only dedicated racing channel, the loss of Irish meetings would be hard to take. Wouldn’t miss the Sligos and Ballinrobes to much but Leopardstown, The Curragh, Punchestown, Fairyhouse….big loss to our screens imo.July 20, 2007 at 20:00 #108685Well, I am watching Emma Spencer and Andrew Barr at Newmarket, I have the mute button employed and I am wondering what Mrs. Spencer brings to racing coverage.

Like Victoria Beckham nothing, but she thinks she does because her husband is a top jockey and she thinks everyone likes her, she always seems to sneer to me on screen and doesnt like any jokes made about her
July 20, 2007 at 20:18 #108689I have never heard as many "buts..aaahs…mmms…aaahmms…and….eerrrrs" in the one evening.
July 20, 2007 at 20:39 #108692She’s had a few late nights just lately, Heffo. A couple of needy ankle biters have temporarily affected her lucidity.
Big ups to Richard Hoiles last night for selecting a 50/1 shot at Sandown. It lost – and lost badly – but it was a brave selection and well argued.
If I have an issue with all of the stations, it is the conservatism of their selections for the viewers. Dullsville.
The exceptions are memorable. I remember Francome picking a 28/1 shot at the same venue over the sticks, (one of Norma Smiths), which hacked up in a handicap hurdle in the mud.

I think that horse was Ibal in the Imperial Cup one year. A proper mudlark.
July 21, 2007 at 09:50 #108712But what happens when there are say four or five meetings and they clash due to a delay cant have everything on at once even with the red button cant watch two races at once properly
I wouldn’t want us to have just the one channel in these circumstances, even if those races notionally follow in rapid-fire succession, i.e. at five minute intervals, rather than clash. Either the pre- and post-race analysis would have to be sacrificed, or else certain races / meetings omitted entirely, all the more so if any races are subject to the workaday delays that can strike at any time (e.g. horse losing a shoe, refusing to go in the stalls sweetly, etc).
In which case, if only one company is entrusted with covering all British and Irish fare, it would be best advised to run two channels. How long before my NTL / Virgin box here at home ascribes RUK1 and RUK2 (or ATR1 and ATR2, in the interests of parity) to channels 534 and 536?

July 21, 2007 at 13:33 #108723Cheers DJ. I should have remembered, but the noggin is not what it was.
July 22, 2007 at 10:07 #108789Most have their good points apart from the pathetic BBC, {Balding, Carson, Rishi, Cochrane, Scudamore} imagine going on a long journey with that lot on your bus, zzzzzzzzzz.
Channel 4, my favourite only just, love the general banter, they all seem to enjoy what their doing & they seem to like each other, unlike the BBC Crowd who make what their doing seem like a household chore.
ATR, Chapman apart, excellent coverage. Give me Tony Ennis anyday.
RUK, While very dull in comparison to ATR, has the excellent James Willoughby, no sitting on the fence like a lot of the other presenters, tells it as it is, even if he does waffle on a bit.
One gripe about RUK, show very little betting shows, when they do eventually show it, is when most of the horses are already loaded , why can’t they do what ATR do and have a betting caption on the right hand of the screen, save me having to use the text service all the time. Can’t believe that BBC is in front of channel 4 in the voting, most who voted probably already have one foot in the grave.
Apart from Thompson their coverage put racing on the map, "come on you channel 4 lovers get voting".
Seems the duller the coverage the most votes you get, which would suggest why RUK holds a substantial lead in the Poll. Seems like ch 4 got so low a vote, as most of the voters probably downed it because of Graham & Thompson, sometimes even Thompson can be tolerable unlike Chapman that sycophantic butt licker , seems to spend his day to see how far up each guests hole he can get.July 22, 2007 at 10:19 #108794I think this is because Racing UK have decided to be a horse racing channel while ATR have decided to be a betting channel thats why they talk about betting on various sports, depends really whether you are a "punter" or a "horse racing viewer" i suppose.
July 22, 2007 at 11:32 #108801Although I’m not Matt Chapman’s biggest fan, to put it mildly (to me, he looks like the missing member of BROS ), his interview with John Gosden was one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Gosden was an absolute joy to listen to. Fascinating and insightful.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
July 22, 2007 at 12:16 #108809Whatever channel he’s on, John Gosden is always helpful and informative, and provides an object lesson in how trainers should respond to interviewers. He should ditch the trilby, though.
One of the problems that the media, both TV and written, face is the widespread rather truculent attitude of trainers and jockeys. I’m glad to see that BHA supremo Nic Coward is aware of this, maybe he can help change the culture.

My bad, but his interview prior to the Windsor Forest put me off backing Nannina.
July 22, 2007 at 13:01 #108814Hi! Euro, nice to see you have found your way over here!

July 22, 2007 at 13:09 #108817Had to Col, so little racing debate on TH these days.
July 24, 2007 at 06:42 #109029And the winner is as you can see Racing Uk which I have to say surprises me I didnt realise their format was so popular and well recived (yes I know its only 40 votes and hardly scientific but) as a percentage of horse racing members of this site perhaps the other three should look at why horse racing fans perfer their style. Why is Racing UK style so preferred to the other three what do they do different?
July 28, 2007 at 00:23 #109455There`s not much I enjoy about the BBC coverage these days. A catalogue of poor choices of personnel to fill the key roles. ( I`m almost at the stage where I`d say come back Jimmy Lindley – all is forgiven).
C4 has it`s moments but too many banal summer Saturdays at Newmarket. Hope it doesn`t go too over the top for Goodwood – I think C4 is pretty good when it`s a bit more restrained and serious with the right mix of presenters.
I`m on a basic Sky mix which includes ATR. It`s coverage is welcome particularly of the Irish scene. Hate the booth – the colour scheme is migraine inducing even without Chapman`s skin pigment.
I don`t subscribe to RUK bit have seen abit of it. It looks a bit better value now as part of the Setanta package – not that I`d really want any of the other bits. I welcome the more restained approach but am not bowled over by their offerings – still seems poor value to me.
I`d vote for C4 on a good day but they are a curates`s egg
