Ok I’ve managed without racing but I’m now shaking like a junkie in a Leith drug den , however when racing does start again its going to be a gambling minefield , who’s got there horses fit , in form ? , it’s more then likely it’ll be all weather low grade stuff first , what’s everyone’s thoughts ,any trainers to follow etc …..I’m really missing just sitting with the racing post on a Sunday morning
April 28, 2020 at 15:33 #1487653My best guess is sometime in June, racing will be behind closed doors for the rest of the flat season and probably the first few months of the jumps as well.
If and it’s a big if, there is a vaccine early in 2021 then you lucky Cheltenham Festival punters will maybe not have missed out.

April 28, 2020 at 16:15 #1487657Following received from BHA in respect of Racing commencing with crowd
Good afternoon,Thank you for your e-mail. It is not possible currently to give a definite date when racing in front of crowds will return. Our plans continue to allow for a resumption in May without crowds, if that is possible. We assume it would be behind closed doors only at a point when the safety of participants can be assured and the pressure on the health service allows. Tough biosecurity measures would be in place to keep any risks to a minimum. The BHA has been working with trainers, racecourses and other participants to develop a phased plan for resumption which will allow the sport to transition back to its normal fixture list later in the year. We remain in constant contact with government and are ready to respond quickly, and will give further updates as soon as we are in a position to do so.
Kind regards,
Joe

April 28, 2020 at 17:18 #1487658That is a bit of a blow not having racing in France until at least September. Only the other day The Racing Post published an article that seemed to give the impression they would be restarting in May.
April 28, 2020 at 17:47 #1487661I’m hoping that the jump season will be on and will have started by October. I have almost given up hope that the flat will take place this year but will be delighted to be proved wrong.
I think horse racing will be down the bottom of the list in the governments priorities and the fact that there must be 2 ambulances on course at all times will seriously count against this sport being rushed back anytime soon.
Sadly many smaller trainers, owners , sponsors and even racecourses will no longer exist. Many businesses are going to go under.
April 28, 2020 at 20:02 #1487671April 29, 2020 at 09:57 #1487685I have heard from a friend in France that it is due to start 11th May. Some of the provincial
tracks are so remote – we’ve been racing and only handler/box driver for the horse and jockey tacked up –
no trainer.April 29, 2020 at 11:02 #1487687Fingers crossed on that then

April 29, 2020 at 14:02 #1487704I wouldn’t hold too much hope on that as France today cancelled Ligue 1 and 2 for the season in the football due to fears of a 2nd major outbreak. That’s a big decision to cancel Frances biggest sports league and I can’t see any possibility that they would allow racing in 2 weeks off the back of that news.
I believe the Premier League is highly likely to be cancelled in the next 2 weeks in the uk sadly though once again will be delighted to be wrong.April 29, 2020 at 14:15 #1487705I would not be surprised if the decision to cancel the football season did not have something to do with Paris SG fans gathering outside the stadium for one of their behind closed doors matches.
You will not get that happening for a behind closed doors horse racing.
April 29, 2020 at 20:07 #1487719With the likelihood of Germany reintroducing it’s lockdown, might heed other countries in their lifting of their own lockdowns. This in turn could hinder sporting events like racing.
The best things in life are free.
But you can give them to the birds and bees.May 1, 2020 at 11:04 #1487767Comparisons with football (and Rugby) are wrong. These are sports that will not have crowds until the vaccination is completed. Im optimistic because i have a string feeling that the Oxford team have nailed it but next season is definitely a goner (as more or less confirmed by the times today) and probably beyond that
Racing is a sport where distancing would certainly not be impossible. Limited crowds would definitely work and some courses are particularly roomy.
the big mistake would be for the gov to treat all sports the same. It might be snobbish to say so but some sports simply have more civilised crowd amongst its core support (and i mean core support) than others.
Football will just have to wait. Racing could justifiably come back mid summer
May 1, 2020 at 17:38 #1487776Things got that bad for me I even started to compile speed figure for Hong Kong just to keep my hand in.
Comparing the HK speed figures to the UK just add on 20lbs to the figures due to the difference in their handicap system, any horse with a speed figure over 50+ (UK70) is above average.
I backtrack every day and add meetings as I go.

I look forward to when the honest racing starts again…

May 1, 2020 at 17:46 #1487777Meanwhile, in the US Oaklawn Park and a few other smaller tracks in places like Oklahoma and Nebraska have been running sans crowds this whole time. The Arkansas Handicap and the Arkansas Derby (split into two divisions due to so many entries!) are going tomorrow in lieu of the Kentucky Derby. Without any leadership from the federal government it’s kind of a free-for-all with different lockdown rules in every state/county/city, and the governors of Kentucky, New York, Maryland and California have been proactive enough that Churchill, Belmont, Pimlico and Santa Anita are likely going to open up later than tracks in the not-so-sane states.
The whole spring jumps season is cancelled for sure, though people are still tailgating and racing stick-horses on “Virtual Steeplechase” days.
i.e. this tomorrow https://aikenvirtualsteeplechase.com/
After all, horse racing is just an excuse to dress up like an easter egg and get drunk and you can do that perfectly well in your own backyardMay 1, 2020 at 19:23 #1487782The latest wishful thinking from the BHA
May 1, 2020 at 21:08 #1487784By the way, how is social distancing supposed to work in a 12 runner race? Horses and jockeys will come very close to each other when entering the stalls and also during the race, especially in a finish. That’s the nature of this sport.
