Having had a little more time to think the one that sticks out recently was Boreham Bill at 66/1
Former member Billion had not long passed away and I continued an old thread of his putting a pound on horses with “Bill” or a type of connection to Billion in their name. Boreham Bill got me off to a flyer early on. I haven’t been able to keep the thread going every day but still put one in know and then.
I think Bill was looking after me that day

Nathan thats a lovely story, I’m sure he was, and what a great way to carry on the thought of someone. :)

Hard to look past Nortons Coin; also was a great race.

I’ll be controversial and pick a race that I had no financial interest in.

    Secreto’s derby.

The odds on El Gran Senor was galloping all over Christy Roche’s mount and it was only a question of how far.

Then Pat pressed the button and the rest is history.

Some great stories on this thread.

Norton’s coin sticks in the memory as that was the first gold cup I remember watching, didn’t back it sadly. My 20p was on Nick the Brief that day.

From a punting perspective Mohayed was a favourite in the county hurdle at 50/1 and 120s on the machine. Made sweeter by having remuluc for the exacta which paid over £3k (if you are really bored and watch the replay I’m the bloke behind the winning post throwing the racing post into the air)

Other one would be Minella Indo in the Albert Bartlett at the same price the next year, cudnt believe the odds given its form behind the Ballymore hurdle winner.

    Great memories

Mine was less than 3 months ago. One of the online tipsters who I follow from a distance had put up a horse to win at Wincanton at the huge price of 125/1.
I dont normally get involved but his blurb was most convincing.
Decided to have a mad few quid ew and got on with what was a busy day.
Completely forgot about it until i checked my account later in the evening. Was surprised to see several more pounds in it than there had been that morning.

    Won easily at 125/1. Madness!

Star Appeal – 1975 Arc. I had backed him when he won the Eclipse earlier that year (I say “I backed him”, my dad put my shilling each-way on for me as I was 12). Kept faith with him for the Arc which he won at 119-1, beating the likes of Allez France and Dahlia. I remember he came from nowhere and my parents just stared at me in disbelief. I found a note in an old diary I came across while clearing my mum’s loft recently. He won at 119-1 but I only got 100-1, which obviously irked me at the time. I don’t know why this was. Quite possibly my dad looked at his price and didn’t even bother placing the bet, and then couldn’t work it out! Even now, I can’t believe how he went off at that price having won an Eclipse, as well as some top German races.

Followed his stud career afterwards and pleased to see that he still turns up in top class pedigrees from time to time, despite never being a fashionable stallion.

I guess mine would have to be the horse that my account is named after, Moyenne Corniche winning the Ebor.

Myself and a mate were in the bookies watching the Northumberland plate a couple of months before the Ebor and were both drawn to him absolutely cantering at the 2f pole and then not quite getting home and finishing 5th.

From then on we had a plan and begun getting stuck into him in the antepost markets immediately at some pretty big prices.

Ellison then ran him in the John Smiths Cup over an inadequate 1m 2f a month later which we took, rightly or wrongly, as him just giving the horse track experience at York, so more money went on antepost.

On the day Brian Ellison was on The Morning Line and tucked everyone up by banging on about his other horse, Saptapadi. We didn’t mind though as it pushed MC out a bit more and we went in again.

I couldn’t even watch the race as I was at my beloved Brentford watching them take on Leyton Orient in a London derby. I had spent the whole day banging on about the horse to anyone who would listen and so quite a few of the lads there got involved at the 33/1 early price as well.

Phones in those days weren’t exactly up to streaming and so I was waiting on a phone call from my mate to let me know the result. It was just getting to half time and I couldn’t get any signal on my phone in the terrace so was desperately trying to connect to the Sportinglife fast results page on my phone and then it suddenly came up:

    1st – Moyenne Corniche 25/1

Our small section on the Ealing Road terrace absolutely erupted, much to the bewilderment of the other fans. Suffice to say it was an epic night out after that and I didn’t have to put my hand in my pocket many times!

    Brentford won 5-0 as well.

    Happy days! B-)

Brown Sedge outsider in a 3 runner race. I think odds on fav Cloudy Bays brought the 2nd fav down at the first (both horses/jockeys were fine) leaving the 10/1 outsider to make his way home in his own time under Norman Williamson. I obviously backed the horse and this was during my first visit to the Listowel festival in 2002.

One of my least favourites was a horse called Tioga Gold. There were 3 “colours” in the race Blue Doo-daa and Red Summat who were fav and 2nd fav. I think I backed the 2nd fav after thinking about at least having a bit ew on the rag at 125/1 but being told by the commentator the horse had not won for five years decided against it. Tioga Gold duly did the business

Accidental Agent winning 2018 Queen Anne. I backed him at 80/1 and won decent money ;-)

My favourite upset should’ve been Night Of Thunder in the 2014 2000 Guineas…

Throughout the winter, I was adamant that he was gonna be my selection for the race. However, he got slayed by Kingman in the Greenham and, cometh the 2000, I changed my mind because there was no way I could envisage Kingman being beaten … DANG!

    :-(

Thanks for the grim reminder concerning Night Of Thunder, Rob.

About two weeks before the Guineas I attended a hospital appointment for reasons I can no longer remember. On the morning of the race I received an NHS form with registration details so I could access my records. The password allocated to me was Night Thunder.

I don’t set much store by coincidence bets so I didn’t back the animal. Cue some wailing and gnashing of teeth when the race was over.

This was a rare tip from The Gods of Racing I was so unwise to ignore.
