Currently rated 168 prior to yesterdays effort where he was staying on like a trojan but what rating do you think "God" will give him tomorrow, when the weights are released for the Grand National?

Last year he put him on 162 when his actual current rating was 171 – my guess is he’ll go with 162 again.

But being the great logical thinker that he is, Smith might go for an even lower mark to allow for him now being a 13-y-old.

Phil Smith – "13 year olds with top weight haven’t a good record" – He sounded serious too.

He could have added that not many ex-Arkle Chase winners go on to take the National either!

You’d hope he’d know beter than to dabble in statistics like that, given he used to be a maths teacher.

In previous years God has said one of the biggest reasons top weight’s marks are lowered is because their form is at shorter distances; and each pound is worth more (in lengths) at extreme distances… This year that arguement has not been made because Tidal Bay ran so well in the Welsh National (ie now at his best and should be assessed at extreme distances). Yet has still been given a much lower weight… Funny that!

Can’t use one excuse, now come up with another; he’s a teenager!

The race has been ruined, Mickey Mouse fences and legalised cheating by the handicapper to favour the higher rated horses.
Why doesn’t he drop the better horses a few pounds in the Scottish National?

I agree entirely Eddie. But you’d still have to be insane to back Tidal Bay at the prices. I doubt he’ll last a circuit.

    Eddie,

Because the Scottish national weights aren’t announced over lunch at a posh London hotel, with the press and trainers around to polish Mr Smiths ego and allow him to make a speech about how clever he is and how many hours he had to work to come up with what most of us could do in ten minutes.
