CS – I thought your kitty was £20 per week? £400 all in one go, and on a 20/1 shot too (I know you rarely go over 10/1).

If you are clever enough to be able to make 5% on horseracing bets long term then you should be clever enough to figure out what sorts of things need to change in order to make a living from that. For instance, if that 5% is fixed for the purposes of this discussion, you need to turn over several times what you are currently turning over.

You do not, however, necessarily need a big bank to achieve this. You just need to make the bank you have work much harder for you. Big sums can certainly be turned over starting with less than £10k, but it depends on the approach being used.

I start each season with £1000 kitty,(I call that 100 points at £10 a point) The "£20 a week all in" I used that to show how cheaply one can start, (£20 a week sounds nothing does it?) If enough dicipline is used it’s not that hard to get a couple of hundred points ahead with 10 – 20 point bets on safe EWs and then the stakes can build up a bit. Although this year I risked nearly half the kitty on my first bet, so I could do with more discipline than I show if I’m honest but I’m getting better at that as I get older!

As soon as (or if) my kitty doubles I take out the starter cash and go back to 100 points. By the time Weird Al ran the kitty stood around 500 points and taken my starter funds out so 20 points EW wasn’t that big a hole if he lost. Since then it’s been up and down like a whore’s drawers, never quite got to 1500 points although I’ve been fairly close since I joined this forum. Dropped alarmingly to around 600 at one point but my nerve held and Tidal Bay helped no end.

In addition to my first expanation, I did feel the information was very solid and I liked the look of his form once I looked at in the light of what I’d been told.
It looked like a 7-1 shot yet Ladbrokes were showing 20-1

Thanks for the input, what would you suggest the T/O could be say daily with less than £10k.The only suggestion i could make on what you say is maybe go in slightly heavier on certain races i feel more confident about.

I can’t see anywhere in the thread as to how you make your selections?

Forget trying to find the winners, laying non triers is the way forward if you want garanteed profit but just dont get caught or you’re a stuffed turkey – BHA aren’t exactley on top of things a the moment so you could probally get away with murder.

Sure your selections are THE most important point, if you can’t pick wiiners you’ll lose and if you can you should win, it’s hardy rocket science

That is correct in some aspects, but the picking of winners is only part of the equation, there are some really good form students/ race readers out there but with out the correct money management staking etc fail, even though they can pick winners.

    What does it take?
Dedication, uhuhm, dedication, that’s what you need.
    Also:
A good form book/s. e.g. Timeform Perspective and Chasers & Hurdlers.
Being able to read those form books in the correct manner. Other than the obvious stuff, take things like: Likely pace in the race and trainer’s recent form in to account.
An over all knowledge for the game, and to enjoy studying form.
Specialise: There is no way anyone can have big enough knowledge of every grade of every type of racing. Find what you are good at and stick to it.
Knowing the table of odds and chances (odds and their true percentages) off by heart. (Had to put that one in now didn’t I?).
Being able to spot the value bet.
Being able to look at the race without feeling, "I want to back the winner" (likely to think the fav is value when he’s not). Or, "don’t want to risk much" (likely to think an outsider is value when he’s not).
The latter is what’s let me down over the last year or so. Did well before upping stakes. May be I am not cut out for the job.

All it takes is Strength of Character and a Clear Mind when you see the red mist on your P/L Sheet.

Making money is easy in this game but its easier to lose it.

People with moles in stables can make huge sums.

Fair play to people who spend their life cracking "The Game" but i wouldn’t wish the life on anyone tbh.

Its like a addiction same as Drink and Drugs….if you can do a a few hours a day then completly cut off from it well done but i tried it for a month when i was off in the summer from Uni and mananged to make 2000k and lose it all again.
