Lots of racing today. More than anyone wants to write about.
Here is what I think.Toronado needs further…so does Night of Thunder.
Treve has possibly retired herself.
Brown Panther at 24/1 on betfair looked generous before the race// Leading light when touching 1.85 probably would have been a brave bet regardless given the depth of the race.
Ectot is probably better then he looked today ( Seemed to idle to me)
Ruler of the World might have been a better derby winner than previously believed.SHL

I am not sure that was much of a race today. I have long felt that the Grand Prix De Paris won last season by Flintshire was an awful renewal. He’s been disappointing in five races since and I oppose him every time he runs. The race has had 26 subsequent runs and
zero
wins, which is rather worrying for a group 1.
Looking back at last years Derby, before today’s win, Ruler Of The World had run five times without success. Other than Guineas winner Dawn Approach who bounced back after finishing last at Epsom, the only other winners to come out of the Derby from 51 starts were 6th placed Flying The Flag who won a group 3, and 11th, Ocean Applause who won a maiden. Not a lot there to change the mind of the handicapper who awarded Ruler Of The World a lowish rating for his Epsom success.
He’s no appeal to me at 16/1 for The Arc
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 14, 2014 at 19:24 #490268It might not be as simple as that from a pedigree angle, Steve. Ruler Of The World is half-brother to Duke Of Marmalade.
Duke Of Marmalade achieved his best ratings as an older horse and went on a Group 1-winning spree once his physical issues were ironed out. Granted, Ruler Of The World achieved more at three, but his hit-and-miss profile suggests that he has had physical or mental niggles up until now.
I wouldn’t want to back Ruler Of The World for the Arc given the weight concession to three-year-olds and the fact that Dettori will be aboard, but fancy him to be the best older horse in Britain and Ireland through next year if campaigned smartly.
September 14, 2014 at 19:57 #490271We learnt that there is no outstanding candidate and no out and out superstar alas.
More than that we realised what a terrific training job John Oxx did with Sea the Stars and what a superstar he really was.
September 14, 2014 at 20:07 #490273Your probably right. I think after Frankel and Sea the Stars, superstar became a word thrown about too much!!
Still, a very decent bunch of 3-y-olds this year.SHL
September 14, 2014 at 20:21 #490275Probably learnt that too many people blame jockeys when most of the time the horse wasn’t good enough. Australia would maybe have beaten tgg by a length at most but no guarantee he would have. Brown panther ,although flattered by winning margin was a worthy winner. Treve isn’t the same horse this year an if taghrooda is the fav for the arc then it’s the weakest race for many a year. Also I think john oxx should get more credit for the way he trained sea the stars. Not sure the horse is as great as many are saying but it was a great training performance to achieve what he did. Also aob has a cracking bunch of 2 yos as well and JFK could well justify the hype. Last thing is that the unusual firm ground could well have caused a few of the strange results we are seeing and if it comes up soft on arc weekend expect a few reversals of recent form.

Nobody knows how good a horse will ultimately be, what I am saying is it’s early days to uprate Ruler Of The World in terms of the quality of Derby winner he was, based on a group 2 win from a horse who has not won in more than a year.
I backed Ruler Of The World at 25/1 for The Derby before he ran at Chester last season and I hoped he might go on to improve after he landed the Classic. It didn’t happen for him and although today was a step in the right direction, it wasn’t a particularly inspiring field.
The general opinion seems to be that Frankie gave him a good ride and perhaps outwitted the other jockeys today. The Derby winner beat Flintshire three parts of a length when they were 7th and 8th in the Arc last year and he’s extended that margin to 1 and a half today. I just don’t buy into the notion, in some places, that he’s suddenly a serious contender for this season’s Arc having begun the day a 33/1 shot.
If he were my horse I’d rather aim him at The Breeder’s Cup Turf.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Tapestry certainly did little for the form yesterday. Although dropped in trip, she was supposed to have loads in hand on the ratings. A dismal effort.

September 14, 2014 at 21:00 #490280..that Treve had a nice easy race today. Jarnet did nothing on her, and didn’t need to win it, it’s only about one race with Treve.

Yes, that narrow defeat, ricked back and getting beaten by horses rated a stone and a half lower are the ideal prep trio of runs for the Arc.
Maybe this is a Barney Curley type of coup in progress. Watch her odds dip from 10/1 to Evens by sun-up

September 14, 2014 at 21:34 #490283Treve looked (at least on telly) to be very, very warm before the race.
September 14, 2014 at 21:37 #490285Some will have learned that Horses make fools of us all.
Treve
would be going off the 5/2 fav for the Arc………If she hadn’t run this season.
As for yet another over-rated superstar from Team Coolmore!
What I have learned is Aiden O’Briens ability at placing horses is seriously flawed.I first noticed it the yearDuke of Marmalade
ran in the Arc.

..you don’t need to win the Vermeille to win the Arc..
..last year Treve beat Wild Coco and Tasaday 1-3/4L and 3-1/2L… how close do you think they’d have got in the Arc..?
September 14, 2014 at 22:00 #490289Is this the John Oxx appreciation thread? How many winners has he trained this season? And the previous season? You can’t keep living off past memories. Not sure what today’s racing has got to do with Sea The Stars?
Today we found out that Ectot has a useful change of pace and could be a very good horse, in fact one that might be good enough to win an Arc. Sadly, I like his Arc preparation a good deal more than Taghrooda’s.
That was probably Ruler Of The World’s ‘Arc’. Flintshire got his ground but didn’t pick up. He has failed to convert last year’s potential.
September 14, 2014 at 22:34 #490291What I learned:
1 Jockeys can not judge pace. Ruler Of The World and Brown Panther both won today because other jockeys left them alone in front of them. One thing that has gone largely unmentioned is Moore yesterday on The Grey Gatsby. He had the horse out the back and a few lengths adrift at one stage. The jockeys went crazy up front and Moore just left his horse alone, no panic. He finished the race really strongly whilst others weren’t finishing. If Joseph had held on to Australia a bit longer he would’ve won.
2 The Arc this year could go to anything, nothing seems to want to win it. Horses are falling into favouritism seemingly by the week. This is the year the Japanese could win it.
3 Treve hasn’t trained on OR still has problems. One thing for certain she isn’t going to win this years Arc unless she suddenly finds a ridiculous amount of improvement.
4 Cursory Glance and Gleneagles won the big 2yo races but neither of them are anything special.
September 14, 2014 at 22:50 #490292Treve appears to be taking after her dad (Motivator) in that, since winning a top race in impressive style, will never triumph in another race.
