I had this discussion with a horse racing fan the other day in a restaurant. He and his partner were looking into getting a print of that famous picture, We Three Kings, showing Arkle, Red Rum and Dessie. I voiced the opinion that perhaps now Kauto could be the 3rd king, particularly if he wins the gold cup, over Dessie. This was rejected, as it was claimed Kauto will never capture the public imagination as Dessie did, being Grey.

I just thought it was an interesting chat and wondered if anyone had any other views. Could there be a ‘new king’? Would you replace any or all of them?!

    Oh dear me no!

They’ll simply have to up the stakes: I suggest the next Christmas Card should be captioned:

"The Four Horses of the Apocalypse"

    .

After all, reading the racing press, we’re not that far from Doomsday…

Consiering Kauto Star would run Desert Orchid of his feet at 2nd last, I think that he should be replaced and the statue at Kempton should be aswell.

Kauto Star is the best chaser we’ve seen in last 60 odd years.

Where were you in the 1960s? Locked up with no telly I assume,…either that or oldtimersdiscease has set in :( There were at least three MUCH better chasers running at the time…..no need for me to name them

CS, I know you’re a huge Denman fan, and was wondering how you would rate him against Arkle and Mill House.

Nowhere near Arkle nor Flyingbolt, I’m not so sure about Mill House ……equal third maybe?
They both had their problems after initial promise of the very highest degree, Denman’s was his heart, Mill House too in a way, he had his broken by Arkle.
If Denman amd Mill House could have met when both were in their prime it would have been one hell of a race and spectacular to watch, two big bruisers going head to head…..WOW!!

How about throwing in Rondetto. From memory he was a decent chaser, I think. Apart from falling when 100/6 on, that is.
