“Who has been calling for them to not water at all the last month?”

Wasn’t saying anyone was just meant that they had no choice but to water at the bare minimum simply to maintain good to firm as there was no significant rain forecast over the last month to help them out – rain wasn’t forecast in the required amounts until Sunday, so they had to rightly continue what they were doing up until Sunday and looking at the Ascot website under the Watering section confirms that:

“Watering (In Progress) Watered Straight Course 8mm Saturday morning, 10mm on Thursday and 14mm on Tuesday. The Round course was being watered 4mm each night to Friday. Watering straight course 5mm Monday morning”

I think what they have done to date has been the right course of action and I wouldn’t be surprised if this week they actually did water after racing if they miss the rain forecast Tuesday (between 2-6mm according to Ascot website) and the scattered showers for Wednesday (Met Office say 40-50% chance of rain between 6am-8am) and Thursday (Met Office say 30% chance of rain between 4pm-7pm) although the temperature is due to be 24-25C all week.

I am well south of Ascot but, if they’ve had the same weather, they will have had no rain for many weeks. Allotment is like concrete, apart from the huge cracks. Impossible to even get a fork into it before the torrential rain we had on Sunday. Still rock hard even now. As LD73 says, 5mm will do nothing apart from help maintain grass cover, which is what watering ought to be used for. Very difficult when forecast is for “thundery showers” as it’s impossible to predict where they may fall.

Tbf, I had forgotten to take a going stick reading from Tonge’s allotment before offering an opinion.

Life is a perpetual learning curve.

As previously stated, Ascot reported 1.8mm rain yesterday – let’s see what tonight and tomorrow morning brings.

I’m predicting 3.5mm overnight for the going update in the morning. Anyone else want to play?

    That’s a bold prediction, sir.

My weather app of choice says 10mm, but that’s in the next 24 hours, with rain possibly until noon.

I will therefore go for 6mm (that’s SIX of your metric MILLIMETRES) by the first morning going update.

    Next?

I stuck my finger out the window in sunny Sidcup (with not a cloud in sight) and I am going with 5mm – part of me is thinking the rain will miss them altogether and they put on 5mm themselves.

No rain overnight but will sling it down just before the first.

The more I know the less I understand.

RTB with a Michael Fish-esque 0mm prediction. Closest wins though, might have a shout.

Just checked again, the f/c is ever changing. A downpour still looks likely but over a smaller period of time, the main block coming in has moved westward toward sunny Swindon.

Racing Post….Going update: Ascot hit by downpour on Tuesday morning

Ascot has been hit by heavy rain before the first day of the royal meeting, with nearly 10mm falling in the early hours at the track.

Around 9.6mm of rain at the Berkshire course has been recorded since midnight.

They’re claiming the ground is unchanged but let’s see what the going stick says later – yesterday’s readings….

    “Stands side: 8.0
    Centre: 7.9
Farside: 7.9. Round: 6.8. Readings taken at 8am on Monday.”

Ground to be re-assessed at midday. Why that long a wait? It’s been nearly 4 hours since the rain fell. I got all excited when Stickels went out there at 620am to declare only 1.8mm had fallen, only to wake up a few hours later with 10mm total.

Ian wins with 6mm prediction as the closest. Good game.

Official description is good (good to soft in places on the round course) from good to firm (good in places on the round course).

Predictably the good to soft arears are running down into, through and up out of Swinley Bottom and the old mile chute.

If you horse can’t cope with that ground then they really shouldn’t be racing at all – I guess Alan King will have a rather difficult decision to make re Trueshan if the ground doesn’t get softer…..if we don’t get further rain it will start drying out with warm temps predicted all week.

“Ian wins with 6mm prediction as the closest. Good game.”

Obviously, it’s just a game, but my open-top victory bus will be driving slowly up the TRF Champs-Élysées to its terminus to the TRF equivalent of the Arc de Triomphe after racing.

Have to say I think they’ve done a good job re watering policy overall at Ascot this week.

It seems the rabid fear of “Good to Firm” summer Flat racing ground is subsiding a bit generally as the Derby meeting at Epsom proved similar.

    Well highlighted by Yeats, IMO.

One of the chief historical culprits strikes again.
