Ex racehorse, trained by Robert Johnson. Shot at livery and dumped in the owner/leaseholders garden. Reported in the York Press.
October 16, 2014 at 19:35 #492517What a horrible story. Hope they’ve got somebody for it
October 17, 2014 at 05:47 #492546According to the York Press and the BBC local news it was because the owner was three weeks late with the fees (£30) so the livery owner had her shot and put in a JCB bucket and tipped over the owner/leaseholders hedge into her garden.
War Kitty was a 7yr old mare and had raced 4 times in 2011. I hope she was brought down from training and rehabilitated properly so she at least spent some of her time after racing happy and not confused but it doesn’t sound like it.
October 17, 2014 at 07:08 #492550A most bizarre story … livery yard owner thought they’d done the right thing ???? Even if they couldn’t load the mare and she was getting worked up why pts??? If she could be held to pts she could have been put in a stable or field to calm down … And then why dump her in the leasees garden??? Apparently she was still alive … Absolute nut cases .., one released no charge one on bail. The liveries at GG Equestrian need it get out NOW and never return under his ownership … Totally bonkers ….
October 17, 2014 at 12:00 #492566This was an ex racehorse and – I love racing – but I’m sick of hearing the mantra ‘they’re treated like royalty’ in the racing press then reading something like this. The mare didn’t choose to be a racehorse and to meet such an end at a young age is just awful. She certainly wasn’t treated even with decency, never mind like royalty.
Whatever the situation between the livery and owner/leasee, it’s the mare that’s paid for it.
October 17, 2014 at 12:07 #492567According to reports in the paper all this happened late evening.
Dreadful story….. how many horses does he put down to own a gun????The RSPCA use his farm for ‘rescues’.October 19, 2014 at 16:25 #492906What a horrible thing to happen to the poor mare, Sounds almost like a mafia type crime! hope that the people responsible for such cruelty get what they deserve.
October 20, 2014 at 07:08 #492963Just another sad example of horses being treated as (sporting) goods. No horse should ever be shot for no reason at all. The last or current owner should always make sure that the horse gets a decent retirement after its career ends. Life for an animal shouldn’t end when people can’t afford it any longer.
Why bother with so much breeding at all? Breeding should become more selective and so the sport when it comes to new owners.October 20, 2014 at 08:36 #492969Very well said RubyLight.
November 17, 2014 at 16:23 #495575The guy’s been charged.

Hope they throw the book at him. Kill an innocent animal because you’re owed 30 quid? How can that be right in anyone’s book?
November 17, 2014 at 17:00 #495579"Criminal damage"? I’d call it threatening behaviour at the very least
November 17, 2014 at 18:25 #495592If you shoot a horse for 30 quid, who knows what or who you might shoot for 300 quid. Really sick and absolute no excuse to be made.
