I just want to check I haven’t missed something before having a bet here, so would be grateful for any input. I’ve heard nothing on the publicity front since her second ride in a Point; perhaps someone else has news?
Betfair are sponsoring V P with a view to her riding in the 2016 Foxhunter at Cheltenham. Lawney Hill is helping with her training as a jockey. Paul Nicholls is helping too (and, I suppose, might also be asked to find her an appropriate mount in the target race).
Whatever you think of her ability as a jockey, she’s a relatively young, highly motivated and determined athlete who has fallen completely in love with the jumping game.
Why is she 4/1 to RIDE in the Foxhunter?
December 23, 2015 at 19:56 #1226917Some recent info here Joe, although it doesn’t answer your question directly:
December 23, 2015 at 20:15 #1226921Thanks, Alan, that’s encouraging. Unless injured, I can’t see any practical barriers to her riding in it. There’s always the chance that her advisors will say no, but, at the price, I’m happy to take the chance.
December 23, 2015 at 21:30 #1226932I’m no expert in jockeyship and good luck to VP with her ambitions but surely her lack of race riding experience makes her strong odds against to ride in the Foxhunters in 2016.
In fact I’d go as far to say that the relevant parties (BHA, Racehorse owners that may be considering her for the Foxhunters, trainers) should be telling her it’s a no go until she learns her trade at a lower, less competitive level.
I’d argue that point if it was VP or anyone else with similar ambitions and lack of experience.
December 23, 2015 at 23:30 #1226943Have you seen some of the so called experienced jockeys that ride in these races?

Yes I have. Some are top class, every bit as good as professional riders. Some less so.
Have you done any research on how many rides these folks have had under rules or in point to points?
Just as horses have to qualify for races (Grand National a prime example) so should jockeys.

What price have they got her NOT TO RIDE in it steeplechasing?
December 24, 2015 at 18:17 #1227013No price offered for that, yeats, but it would be around 2/11
December 25, 2015 at 17:27 #1227088I think the thing is you pay your money you make your choice. if VP gets a ride in the foxhunters then I am sure she wouldn’t be the worst rider in the race.
In fact two jockeys spring to mind that won the race and neither were exactly brilliant Brod Munro Wilson on The Drunken Duck was a sight to behold !! The thought of it still makes me smile thirty odd years later.
Leave the girl alone and let her have a go!!
Not that I will be backing her .December 25, 2015 at 17:57 #1227092Happy holidays to all.
Coming from a bike riding background, I would think that her natural sense of balance and leg strength would be a big plus and from the races I have seen her ride in she looks very compact and tidy considering how short a time she has actually had on a horse – the only issue is that she will not be able to ride much of a finish (if any) with the whip.
For me as long as she gets a halfway reliable mount that is a relatively safe jumper, I would expect her to ride in the race and complete – she has been getting positive reviews from everybody involved at every stage and non more so than when schooling upsides AP at Jonjo’s place recently.
You obviously wouldn’t back her in the race as more often than not the most experienced riders will be involved in the finish but she will not be out of place in the field given the different experience levels of her rivals and in any case I am quite sure that if the people around her get to a point where they don’t think it is viable for her to be ready in time the plug will be pulled, so I don’t see what the issue is.
December 26, 2015 at 09:02 #1227152This was discussed on the morning line today. If you missed it it could be worth watching. On the information in the public domain I would say the price is far too big.Have Coral heard something? Also I think some of the special markets are for small stakes only.Good luck with your bet.
If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.

No offers is the answer, make of that what you will.

Thanks, CJ. They are accepting a decent stake and 4s still available
December 26, 2015 at 16:36 #1227274I have had £10.00 @4/1,I am sure I have had worse bets.Que sera sera.

None of the horses with which she’s teaming up this season are entered at the Harkaway Club meeting at Chaddesley Corbett tomorrow, so the next earliest she might appear in a Point would be at either Cottenham or Larkhill next Sunday.
There are at least two races at each in which her mounts would be eligible to ride, and I’d be astonished if she isn’t in action somewhere that weekend, and probably most weekends thereafter until March.
What those concerned about the apparent lack of a racecourse appearance for Victoria Pendleton since Barbury on December 6th need to remember is that although there has been pre-Christmas Pointing in Britain since 2006-7, the calendar still isn’t particularly sizeable, a combination of feet of clay from many of the sport’s fourteen administrative Areas and some others having already given up on the concept due to tiny crowds. Those venues that can make November/December Pointing work, however, really can.
Ms Pendleton could conceivably have ridden at Wadebridge, Alwick or (most feasibly) Larkhill on December 13th, but tomorrow’s action at Chaddesley would have been the first opportunity since then to race between the flags. I suppose an appearance in a carefully chosen amateur riders’ handicap under Rules in the meantime may not have gone amiss, mind.

January 6, 2016 at 16:34 #1228611Victoria didn’t take part in any Point last Sunday, but she will definitely be in action this weekend if her intended destination, Wadebridge, beats the weather. It usually does. According To Sarah will be her partner.
Wadebridge is, on the face of it, a curious choice for her third ride in a Point. A narrow, tight, undulating, sharp dumbbell-shaped course that clings to the side of the Royal Cornwall Showground and includes a short section of sand up the run-in, it’s not the sort of place conducive to getting a horse settled into a rhythm of jumping.
On the other hand, she isn’t going to encounter too many other horses on the way round. Wadebridge’s initial entry holds up better than virtually any other Rules or Pointing course in the country (it’s right up there with Overton), but that entry is seldom very big, and only 66 horses have been entered for the entire fixture – including just fifteen (novice riders’ race) and nine (ladies’ open) respectively in the two races for which According To Sarah holds entries.
After two pulled-up rides not at all without merit, I’m sure priority number one will be to register that first completion come Sunday.
In the unlikely event of Wadebridge succumbing to the elements, alternative entries are held at another sharp, undulating circuit marginally closer to her base – namely the Ampton circuit which sits in the shadow of the British Sugar factory near Bury St Edmunds. Wadebridge is very much the state preference of connections at this stage, however.
