I like Rybakina a lot, but there is no way I could ever be confident in backing her. She’s starting her career from scratch after departing from her long-time coach.
She needs a break to re-discover herself and it might take her a bit.

Right now, I’d say Aryna Sabalenka is by far the best player on the women’s tour.

Emma Raducanu knocked out in round one.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say her win in 2021 was a fluke but she did benefit from an unusual set of circumstances and a draw that opened up in a way it was never likely to again.

It is difficult to see her winning at the top level again. Even at her best there are plenty of players better than her. They are not all going to have an off day.

Unfortunately, I do think she has lost a bit of good will by not playing the Olympics and pulling out of the mixed doubles at Wimbledon, bringing Andy Murray’s career there to an end. Martina Navratilova was very critical of the latter decision.

I mostly follow Rybakina, but I also have an eye on Raducanu. She has a nice style of playing and can move very well, though she isn’t the tallest. Despite being no better than a R3 or R4 player at most Slams, she stil has age on her side and could click again given the proper entourage. I don’t know if Dads should get too much involved in their daughters’ careers.
As for Elena, what I wrote two days ago sadly proved to be spot-on. She withdrew before the 2nd round today.
Just watch her during her interview two days ago and tell me what her eyes tell you:

I like Elena Rybakina as well but I wonder if there is some sort of mental block and self doubt with her now? Perhaps she lacks the killer instinct?

Take Wimbledon this year. I freely admit I am pocket talking. I put her up as my bet before the Championship on these pages and backed her again after the second round. The draw opened up, she went odds on and it was there for her to win – and somehow she didn’t.

As for Raducanu, she is still young but not that young in tennis terms. I just can’t see her getting back to the top level. Does she really need to anyway, with millions in the bank and a lucrative commentary job guaranteed when she decides to quit?

I notice that after her first round defeat, “The Guardian” switched off the comments after 50 had been submitted, most of which were critical (but not unpleasant or abusive). At least that was better than the BBC, which did not allow comments at all.

She really lacks the killer instinct and is always prone to a monumental collapse. She beat Sabalenka in the Brisbane final at the start of the year only to lose ten days later to Blinkova (22-20 in the 3rd set tie-break) in the 2nd round of the Aussie Open after throwing away numerous match points.
In the Qatar Open final she led 4-2 and 30:0 against Swiatek in the 1st set only to injure her shin while serving and eventually losing the final in straight sets.
After her convincing Stuttgart win the withdrawals started to become a monthly routine and her loss to Paolini at Roland Garros was one of her worst matches. 49 unforced errors and simply no leg-work at all.
As you already pointed out everything seemed to go her way at Wimbledon after the more popular names were week 1 casualties, but she still couldn’t get past Krejcikova in the Semis. She had no plan that day….. Right now I think she’d struggle against all top 10 players above and below her.

Emma is the exact opposite when it comes to media presence and entertaining the crowd. She isn’t shy at all and I don’t think that any other player in tennis history made more money after his/her maiden Slam win than she did. With so many young talents arising every year she might give it another try, but she could also call it a day and play at a lower level while still entertaining her Instagram followers like Genie Bouchard.

What happened to the girl that Radacanu beat in America? Has she gone on to achieve anything?

Leylah Fernandez is a consistent top 25, at times only a top 50 player. At this year’s US Open she lost in the 1st round to another unseeded player. She struggles to find consistency at the highest level. Also plays the doubles along with her sister Bianca.

Also guys reason I put RYBAKINA up as a bet
Was she my ante post bet at start of year to win this. Otherwise with form and issues she had would not be on her.

Well done to Sabalenka, who was very convincing over the entire two weeks.
