A little churlish, wit, to describe a performance like that as going to script. A wonderful horse imo, and if they’re going to do it purely on maths (ie not deciding Daiwa Major didn’t stay; the three year olds didn’t run to form etc) they’ve just GOT to put him in the 130s now.

Apologies for other thread, didn’t see wits post till now
125/6, couple of lengths for ease of victory and you have a 129/130 horse

    That was really impressive…..

But this was my point really. Zorro you went way over the top about his previous run….the superlatives should have been kept for today when they are actually deserved not after when he makes hard weather of a race he should win easily.

He ran a bad race at Longchamp. Or his trainer trained a bad one.

    hi z

OK, maybe my comment was a bit too casual for the performance, but on DI I’m basically with The Market Man’s post:

an exceptional horse in Japan certainly, but in the international scheme of things probably "just" a very good horse rather than an outstanding champion.

IMO he’ll now maybe get into the high 120s, and if lucky might just hit 130.

Fair enough wit. It’s difference of opinion that makes racing. For once I won’t bow to your erudition.:)
I think he ran consistantly in line with his other performances just came up against slightly better horses than he usually does. He may have run one or two pounds below his absolute best but thats about it. Puts him up there with the likes of Rail Link and Pride but no better than them. In my humble opinion.

What about the notion that the pace of the race didn’t suit his strengths?

I don’t know enough about the strength of his Japanese form to have a strong opinion on it’s worth, but my two penneth on his Arc run is that he shaped like a horse that needed the run. Certainly went through it like the best horse until unable to find extra as the 2 late closers came at him. If there had been an Arc rematch a fortnight later. I’d have had no doubt backing Deep Impact in it.

The phenomenon of inflated numbers for Deep Impact among RP personnel continues apace.

In the photo accompanying the RP report of the Arima Kinen he is credited with saddlecloth number 7 – whereas in Japan he was clearly considered no more than a number 4:

Further to all this Deep Impact talk, it would be good if connections could reconsider their retirement of the horse and instead bring him back to Europe again next year.

He’d be an ideal type for the Doncaster Cup.

Interestingly, Murray Bell, one of the chief racing writers on the South China Morning Post, is of a mind with Zorro:

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Deep Impact is the best turf horse I’ve seen in 35 years of following the sport.

(link may be intermittent, as Taiwan earthquake knocked out 6 of the 7 main cables into/out of HK)
…meanwhile the RP has rated his Arima Kinen run at 133.

Yet to see the JRA’s own rating.
He’s talking absolute nonsense. He’s entitled to his opinion of course but his assessment puts Deep Impact above the Brigadier, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Shergar, Montjeu, Pentre Celebere, El Gran Senor etc etc.

    Complete and utter balony.

Murray Bell is an Australian in his 40s and would therefore not have seen most of those horses, Market Man.
But criticise me by all means if you like, because I’d put him up there with those mentioned.
