    Hi! All.

Haven’t made a meaningful post on here for some time, yeah I know, some would say I never have.

Some of you may know that Madame and I have haven’t had the best of years (2010) on the health front. That, and the fact that I had become disillusioned with the presentation of the sport on the box, plus the carnage and loss of equine life at the Grand National meeting last year has meant that I haven’t watched any live racing since the Friday of that meeting. Squeamish? – probably, tree-hugger? – probably, precious? – definitely.

Any racing I watch these days is on the replay facility on Racing UK and At The Races. I’ve always been a bit odd!

But the sport is dragging me back and I thought I’d start a thread for unexposed types.

I love picking out a horse early in its career and then follow it as it (hopefully!!) rises through the ranks.

I seem to get as much, if not more, enjoyment from a fancy-priced placed horse as from a rather obvious winner.

The idea of the thread is to encourage any other similarly inclined poster to share his/her thoughts, about a bumper horse, novice hurdler, maiden two and three year olds that have caught their eye, with us.

Going on a bit ‘ere, apologies. Right to start the thread off.

KING’S GREY 7-y-o grey gelding trained by Keith Reveley

Spotted when racing prominently and jumping well on his hurdling debut at Newcastle in November. Went off at 14/1 and was in second place two out, then swallowed up and finished fifth beaten 13.5 lengths. That was over two miles, stepped up to 2.5 next time at Ayr in January, started at 12/1 and looked the winner as he jumped the last in front, again having jumped nicely, but was done for toe by the favourite after the last.

He is a strapping grey and has the build of a chaser, so it was a little surprising that he had the speed to win what was probably a poor Huntingdon bumper on debut, backed in to 2/1 favourite from 4’s that day. Difficult to explain a poor effort on his second run in a bumper, at Newcastle, 9/4 favourite, tailed off and only beating one home.

He has an entry in the Haydock 3.50 on Saturday, a ‘fixed- brush’ race, which should suit but it looks quite competitive at this stage.

    CAOLANEOIN

5-y-o bay gelding trained by Seamus Fahey

This King’s Theatre gelding made his racecourse debut at Fairyhouse last Sunday. Starting at 16/1, he was held up at the rear until making headway smoothly as they entered the straight, he led with two to run but was unable to fend off the 1/3 hot-pot Lovethehigherlaw.

Caolaneoin has the size for the game and made a pleasing start to his career here.

    RUSHTEENS (IRE

) 6-y-o grey gelding trained by Martin Brassil

This nice chasing type was having his third run at Navan on Tuesday, he went off at 50/1. His starting prices in his two previous races were 66/1 and 50/1 and he had been beaten 50 lengths and 30 lengths in those races and not sighted. It was a different story on this occasion and when he made headway to lead 4 out he looked to have every chance but he had to give way approaching the last and was then made to look short of pace after the last. The first home is unbeaten in two runs over hurdles and the second is also a winner over hurdles, so that suggests the form is decent. Rushteens could well benefit for a step up in trip and looks to have a future over jumps.

Colin, just putting a little note on yours too, i’ll keep an eye out for the horses your listing.

All very informative, it’s nice to read about horses I probably wouldn’t have spotted (in particular the irish ones) and it makes a change from being told that a horse who has just hacked up by 20 lengths is "one for the notebook"

Had a look Colin. Brilliant jumper and travelled very well for most of the race last time. Hard to tell but it looked to me that he was running on near empty from 2 out and still gave the winner a good race. He could very well win this if he was needing his last run don’t you think? Anyway Fav is going to be very short so should be worth a bet on the place market which I will be doing.

Thanks for pointing him out. I’m sure anything lost will only be out on loan looks a real good propect and as you rightly say worth following

    MOLLY’S LAD

5-y-o bay gelding trained by A.L.T. Moore

Very dark one this; spotted at Fairyhouse yesterday in the bumper that closed the card. Looked to have plenty of size about him and by the very popular Flemensfirth, was never really put into the race in this his racecourse debut.

His rider Mr. N.M. Kelly didn’t look that effective but even so the horse kept on into a rather distant fifth.

He will probably need quite a bit of time but hopefully he will make a success of the game.

I was a little disappointed myself, Fist.

Couple of sloppy jumps but also a touch of the slows methinks. :(

Just had a look at him Colin….Geez isn’t his jcokey tall? would make Michael Dickinson look like a midgit

He and the winner of that race put an awful lot of distance between themselves and the others in a very short space of time. I can see why you liked him.

The likely fav got a shocking ride from Mr Mullins in his only outing when he gave him miles too much to do. Can’t say I was overly impressed when he did start to chase the winner.

He’s highly rated according to the Sporting Life but looks more of a speed type to me who would appreciate better ground which may just make the difference today.

I’ll be backing your fellow and covering my bet on the place market just in case

    Good luck

    VINTAGE STAR

5-y-o bay gelding trained by Sue Smith.

This Presenting gelding made his debut in a Bangor bumper on February 4th., finishing second. As you would expect of a horse owned by Trevor Hemmings he has the build of a future chaser.

He was prominent throughout this event and was in the lead approaching two out, he looked a touch clueless when the eventual winner went past with two to run but then ran on again and was only 3/4 length behind, and closing, at the line.

He should come on for the experience and perhaps pick up a similar event before he starts hurdling.
