Has Santamina run yet Roddy?
September 17, 2009 at 17:01 #249193Not sure if it will go Hurdling but I hope Souter Point (currently trained by R Charlton) goes hurdling this winter.
Hillview Boy of Jim Goldie (runs Ayr today) is another I am hoping can make a mark hurdling this winter.

No ,will probably run in juveniles December on. Shall I change him. Put in Ballyvesey instead if you like?
September 17, 2009 at 17:33 #249199No, thats fine, thanks. Good to have an unraced one to look out for.

– Useful juvenille hurdler last year. Chased home the Grade 1 winning Tharawaat at Fairyhouse and then ran respectably in the big juvenille hurdle on Stephens Day at Leopardstown. Has shown huge improvement on the flat over the summer going up 15lbs in the ratings. If he shows the same improvement over hurdles, he could be very well handicapped.
Ran second in the big handicap at Newbury about an hour ago. This horse is a sure fire winner when he goes back over hurdles.
September 19, 2009 at 19:14 #249385Kangaroo Court is in a novice chase at Uttoxeter tomorrow; may go over there to see him. Could be one to watch out for; dam related to Buck House.
September 21, 2009 at 03:00 #249505FORTY THIRTY: Saw this horse win a novice hurdle a couple of weeks ago, and he looked really good. Could be another Golan Way for this talented and underrated trainer.
DER SPIELER: Was ante post second favourite for the German Derby last year, but didn’t take his chance in the race. Moved to Christian von der Recke stable, and finished third at Kempton last year (the day Flipper won!!). Now trained in Ireland, ran a fine race last time out, and could turn out to be a top handicap hurdler.
OSTLAND: Second in last years German Derby and was a shock entry in a Listed hurdle race at Baden-Baden last month. Despite never having contested a hurdle race before, he eased to victory by 6 lengths with seasoned hurdles strung out behind him (the ex Willie Mullins trained Alexander Castle well beaten), With no Group hurdle races in Germany, Ostland may well take his chance in Britain in the future.
FRAMMASSONE: You’ve probably never heard of him, but Frammassone is the Overdose of the hurdles world!! Unbeaten in all 7 of his hurdle races, Frammassone is trained in Italy, and earlier today he won the Group 2 Gran Corsa de Siepi dei 4 Anni, the Italian equivalent of the Triumph Hurdle – an you’d be hard pressed to find an easier winner of a race! Yes, it’s difficult to equate Italian hurdles form, but I’ve been hugely impressed by him, and you never know, he could one day appear in the UK. Certainly if I was an owner wanting to launch an assault on next years Champion hurdle at Cheltenham, he’d be one horse I’d look at buying! He’s by Fraam out of an El Gran Senor mare, and todays win was his third at group level.

Frammassone winning at Merano earlier this year
September 21, 2009 at 19:04 #249556List is growing nicely, thanks to all the contributors so far. Drunken Sailor doing IC proud, came very close on the flat last Saturday at a huge price. Interesting "foreign" horses from Darren.
September 21, 2009 at 20:34 #249563gee, thanks for your faith in Der Spieler Darren, hope you’re right…
…there’s certainly improvement to come from him after his last run. The Summer break has done him really well.September 23, 2009 at 03:33 #249783OSTLAND: Second in last years German Derby and was a shock entry in a Listed hurdle race at Baden-Baden last month. Just found out that he’s running at Auteuil today in a 48,000 Euro hurdle race! There really was no way he could race in Germany, so France was maybe the logical alternative. If he does well today, who knows, he could well turn out to be Group class over hurdles.

The Summer break has done him really well.No problem Beverley – to be honest, I’ve followed Der Spieler since Erika trained him, and I know that Christian was bitterly disappointed (as you were!!) that the race at Huntingdon was abandoned back in February. I actually thought that he would turn out to be a 3 miler, especially the way Andrew Tinkler was talking after Kempton, but he seems to be doing pretty well around 2 miles at the moment.

September 23, 2009 at 16:28 #249824you’re right Darren, he will eventually be a 3 miler and a chaser (all what he’s doing now is a bonus really, over the distance), it’s just at the moment we are so limited..most 4 year olds only are over 2 miles, and we want to keep him to his own age group if we can. we’ve got a novice hurdle for 4 yo only lined up for him in a few weeks over 2 mile 2, which will definitely suit him better.
Just seen Ostland, afraid he’s not a natural jumper..jmo…and having won a listed race on his debut in Germany, well, where would you take him next.

I’m not sure how many chasers Singspiel has produced, but to me Der Spieler hat got that bit of class, and I think he could be a really good horse for you. Let me know when he runs in England, and I’ll have to try and pop along – and I’ll promise to be calmer than I was when you last saw me!!!!

I’ve just been writing about it on my website – apparently, he was going OK but folded in the home straight. I’m not going to lose faith with him though – he’d only had the one race over hurdles so I would give him another chance. Peter Schiergen does go to Italy sometimes, maybe a 4 year old hurdle race at Merano would be more suitable – usually smaller fields, maybe not quite as intense. That’s where I would go. Be interesting if he bumped into Frammassone though!

September 24, 2009 at 21:08 #249947Black Apalachi – I’ve loved this horse since early ’08. Although his handicap mark is going to be harsh throughout the season; i think we have potential here and at 10 going on 11 we should still get some good runs from him. First step; The Becher Chase.
Notre Pere – If i didn’t know any better; i’d say we may be looking at a future champion in future staying chases. He’s a brute and one i would seriously consider for a future National.
Snoopy Loopy – Sure he’s on the older side, but he’s clearly a class act and i think we’re in for some more "surprises" from him this season.

King Troy a smart chaser in the making
Alan King owner and trainer of King Troy has his eyes on another Novice event in the 3.55 Market Rasen on Saturday were the 7 year old gelding looks sure to continue on his upwards curve this year after true signs of his potential last time out at Newton Abbot.
King Troy a son of Presenting made his debut for Alan King at Southwell in 2008 after a stint over hurdles in Ireland, he came 2nd in the process but failed to build on that run after being tailed off by 53 lengths at Huntingdon and wasn’t seen again that year.
The New Year would see King Troy run in a Novice Chase at Market Rasen on the 25th of April where he beat Kikos by 5 lengths who has subsequently gone on to improve by 12lbs this year. His next run would come in another Novice Chase this time at Bangor and a race in which Alan King has trained 2 previous winners off, King Troy would have to fight hard to win running against a headwind but managed to overturn Tim Vaughan’s odd’s on favourite Too Arms.
There would be a remarked step up in class when running in the Summer Plate at Newton Abbot on his handicap debut but he did not disgrace himself by coming 4th in what was a fine effort, having to carry 11-12 he moved into contention liked a horse that wasn’t out of his depth but it was only an inexperienced mistake at the 3rd last that blew his chances away.
Last month saw Alan King’s 7yo take a step back into Novice Company in a race I feel could be underestimated. The race was run at a solid gallop by Paul Nicholls Just Amazing who could have been an enormous task to break down from the front with any other horse but given King Troy’s speed and determination he was able to run the Nicholls runner down at the finish to record his 3rd win in 4 races during 2009.
Now the race was run over 2m5f which is the distance for the Lord Mildmay Listed race at Newton Abbot and one of the best time performances in the last 5 years over 2m5f came in 2008 by Snoopy Loopy who went on to be one of the talking horses last year including winning a Group 1.
So what happens if we take Snoopy Loopy’s Lord Mildmay win in 2008 and compare the sectionals with King Troy’s success last month?

A pretty conclusive result and an impressive one at that, the results should tell us that King Troy can distribute his stamina and pace to a level off a 155+ rated horse that wouldn’t see him out of place at Group level in the near future especially at big festivals where many novices struggle to go the early pace which should stand King Troy in good stead and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him land the Lord Mildmay Memorial Chase next year. The only niggling doubt in the back of my mind is that the 7yo gelding may just want ground the quicker side of good which may minimize his chances this winter despite heavy ground form back in Ireland but what we do know is the horse wants to win and has shown a determined mentality which is priceless, he is a horse to follow.
King Troy – 3.55 Market Rasen 1.95 5PT WIN
