Watching Tramore on ATR today was a heart in mouth experience…and not very pleasant. The problem seems to be the bend at the end of the back straight where horses (especially on the final circuit of a race)are having great difficulty keeping their feet when racing at speed. Willie Mullin’s charge Pozyc was very lucky to stay on its feet when stumbling in the 2nd race (though was pulled up shortly afterwards). Not so lucky was a horse I backed in the 4th race called Mr Bones who still had every chance when stumbling going around the same bend on the final circuit. He broke a hind leg. To say this is unfortunate isn’t really accurate as this seems to be an issue on a lot of the meetings at this circuit. Isn’t about time that the powers that be did something to try and rectify the problem?

August 14, 2011 at 20:28 #368083It’s only my opinion but I think if a horse dies on the racecourse & not as the result of either a heart attack or a fall, then questions need to be asked.
Four in a day is absurd. Especially two on the same part of the racecourse.
Did I hear correctly that Charger got up after his fall? That looked a bad one.

I heard Kevin O’Ryan on ATR say that Charger got up after a while and was OK. As you say, at the time it didn’t look too promising so some good news there at least.
I just think with some of the racecourses in IrelandNI, you automatically expect incidents to happen because of the way the courses are laid out. Tipperary and Downpatrick are two that spring to mind. I know horses are fragile at the best of times but anything feasible that can be done on the course to try and reduce fatalities, should be done in my opinion.
August 15, 2011 at 09:16 #368112I may be mistaken and i can’t get onto attheraces videoconsole at the minute to check for sure but i think there were 2 horses in the same race that either fell or were very close to falling on friday evening on the same bend
August 16, 2011 at 01:27 #368233very very bad incidents but the minute you hear firm in the going description for a nh race it dramatically increases the risks i for one think that every nh race should be on the easy side of good i know people will be up in arms well the fast ground horses ect will have no chance if thats the case put them on the flat the art of a nh race is the jumping and jumping over a fence on to a concreate track is not right i think the most important point everyone will agree is we dont want to see the injuries we are seeing now !
August 16, 2011 at 07:19 #368242Thsy have been racing at Tramore for a hundred years at least so the statistics should be available.
August 16, 2011 at 21:54 #368320I don’t think it’s necessarily the firm ground. Even going back to when Tramore was shown on the old Racing Channel I can remember horses slipping on that downhill stretch. They might have stats for deaths going back years but do they keep them for horses who slipped up and/or ran out losing all chance there. The fact so many horses died in one day has brought it into focus.
I don’t know how they can fix it, maybe camber the track like Goodwood did some years back or divert some money and build a grandstand at the new track.
August 17, 2011 at 03:14 #368339I may be a simpleton but why not move the people to the top of the hill and race at the bottom?
August 20, 2011 at 04:29 #368658The place is a death trap, it should be shut down. The sooner the new course is opened and this place turned into a housing estate or a hay field, the better. You come flying down a steep hill into a very tight 180 degree turn, utter madness. You’d have more room to turn in my backyard.
