Paul Nicholls gets my vote first three home in the gold cup, everything went right for him last season helps of course with the calibre of horses he trains.

    Paul Nicholls. Mr consistency.

Trained the winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Tingle Creek, QMCC, Hennesy Gold Cup, among countless others.

    Top trainer.

I fully expect Nicholls to hose-up, and probably rightly so, so it allows me to cast my vote for DE Pipe.

Ok, so he may have been to the manor born, but I’m liking the way that he is adopting a different approach to his old man. When your dad has won umpteen (15?) Champion Trainer titles, the temptation must be to follow the same routine, but David Pipe seems to have his own ideas about the kind of horses he wants in his yard, and has so far been reasonably well rewarded.

He needs to get shot of Scunior though. Lovely chap, but it’s my opinion that he’s not good enough to be stable jock at a top yard, imo.

Why is Philip Hobbs on the list? Thought he had a very poor year by his own high standards.

Alan King has been one of my favourite trainers for some time, improving each year and may yet callenge PN.

Twister finally seems to have gotten over the virus and is far more consistent.

All the others are well worth their place. Normally I’d go for an improver, one who has done well in a season. But Paul Nicholls had such a wonderful season I’d have to give it to him. With Master Minded, Denman and Kauto Star he has three of the best horses we have ever seen in one yard, in the same year. He deserves to get racings vote in the BBC TV Personality of the year, let alone anything else.

Why is there no Irish trainers on this list?

I don’t think anyone nominated any, even at the longlist stage.
