Yarmouth – just driven back from there and it took me bloody ages! Any Northern Racing owned track would be high on my list because of the sodding classical music they play (often at high volume) before racing. Does Stan Clarke have any CDs other than Hooked-on-Classics?
September 17, 2003 at 21:58 #92124Doncaster…absolutely does nowt for me…on past experience Ayr..will await new company takeover to see how they fare..Carlisle..didn’t enjoy this track at all..the rest i have been too are ok by me.
September 17, 2003 at 22:32 #92130I don’t like Chester, Epsom, Goodwood, Windsor & Ayr but that’s my personal feeling, they’ll all be here long after I’m gone though!
September 17, 2003 at 22:54 #92131Beverley, Ripon, Catterick, Perth, Carlisle.
September 18, 2003 at 06:31 #92133Picturesque Ripon? The Garden Course? Surely not Mesh. And Beverley? Punting utopia? Surely another mistake!
Personally i would like to see Worcester, Worcester, Worcester, Worcester and Worcester disappear.

catterick- cant think of one good thing about this course
sedgefield
bath
hamilton
fakenham
September 18, 2003 at 07:52 #92137Southwell, Wolverhampton and Lingfield. (Spot the link).
Worcester. You can shove your summer jumping.
Redcar. I’m 45 in a fortnight, and checking my betting records over the past thirtyodd years have thus far had 793 seconds and no winners!

Closing Perth? Absolutely sacrilege! A lovely course, great atmosphere, if that goes then the whole sport’s down the plughole.
I’m not sure I can raise 5 for closures but I don’t like
Epsom, a soulless place and an odd course to hold the premier 1m4f race for 3yos.
I’m really not keen on Newmarket as it’s horrible place to ‘watch’ racing, but I doubt it’s likely to close!
September 18, 2003 at 09:27 #92140It seems that there’s a definate southern bias in this thread and I wonder how many people have actually been to the likes of Catterick, Ripon or Beverley. Let me add my northern weight behind Folkestone and Nottingham to try and even up the stakes.
September 18, 2003 at 09:36 #92143Yeah, stop picking on northern tracks!
Totally with you on Nottingham, but Folkestone would have to stay, if only for sentimental reasons. :)
Wouldn’t miss Worcester, and I suppose Catterick is the worst of the Yorkshire tracks. Maybe Brighton could go too and one of Hexham or Sedgefield, if it was really necessary. Could probably find good reasons to salvage the rest of them.
September 18, 2003 at 10:25 #92144The only track that I have actually visited that I wouldn’t shed a tear for if it was shut down is Nottingham – a ghastly, soul-less dump with no atmosphere whatsoever.
Newbury comes a very close second, but at least they usually stage some decent racing.
September 18, 2003 at 10:30 #92145I must admit I would like to see them all keep going, although the biggest dump I’ve been to is Brighton. That was five years ago however and it may have improved since.Certainly would have to.
September 18, 2003 at 10:48 #92146Mesh..i nearly choked on my coco pops ..Perth ..lovely course..Ian i would run the Leger at Hamilton not Ayr:biggrin: a bit nearer to me ..lol…went to Donny Lincoln meeting a couple of years back and to be honest it comes across the same as Ayr totally souless.

i am to be honest one of those awful southerners but i admit i have actually attended catterick races on a few occassions
so it is not without experience the axe would fall on this track
i have seen ripon racecourse it is quite attractive so i would reprive it on that score   allthough one or two of its days are reasonable
another for the princes axe would be plumpton
phunter i would have to agree with you doncaster seems a soulless track with good class racing and badly designed in the bargain
September 18, 2003 at 12:31 #92148I was at Donny last week and although it’s no York I didn’t think it was that bad. The main stand needs re-building with something more modern though. (I think plans are afoot)
I’d also like to nominate Chepstow which I’ve visited a few times now and never really enjoyed.
September 18, 2003 at 12:37 #92149I’m more than happy for Sal and Happy Jack to have their annual reunion at Westenhangar, but the racecourse at Folkestone is top of my hit list, followed by Worcester, Southwell (Turf), Nottingham and Taunton which are all perfectly hideous (although average field size is surprisingly high, so somebody likes ’em!). September 18, 2003 at 13:31 #92150
Doncaster is up for sale and the only bidders are Northern Racing and Arena Leisure.
As today’s news from Northern Racing (sale of media rights to bookies) indicates, it’s the tracks the bookies don’t want that will be most likely to close.
I would fear for those independent tracks that aren’t part of one of the three main groupings, such as Cartmel, Fakenham, Taunton, Ludlow, Hexham.
I’ve been to all but three tracks in the UK and the one I’d miss least is Worcester. Definitely the worst run course in the country with an apparent contempt for it’s customers.
Brighton used to be dire, but has made big strides since Northern Racing took over. Stan Clarke may not be everybody’s cup of tea and certainly isn’t mine, but he does ensure that the people running the tracks are enthusiastic and fully committed to customer care.
