At a guess, there is a serious issue here. Whatever their ‘analysis’ may say, there does appear to be some pool manipulation going on. The suggestion of this being due to foreign bookmakers paying out on UK Tote returns without being involved in the pools is very plausible.

Tonight’s 18:45 at Chepstow was won by 25/1 shot Blue Clumber. The dividend was originally posted as £3.20.
It has now been [b:3pmssuol]changed[/color:3pmssuol][/b:3pmssuol] to £26.80!!!
The prices and tote payouts on the Sporting Life site (which are usually there or thereabouts in terms of accuracy against the final returns) were as follows:
ROANNE 5/4 (£9.40)
GREGORI 7/4 (£11.90)
BALTIC GIN 5/1 (£2.80)
IMPERIAL SPIRIT 8/1 (£2.90)
BLUE CLUMBER 25/1 (£3.20)It appears that either (1) The calculation of the pool was erroneous for some reason, or (2) The dividend has been altered to avoid unwelcome media concern.
Obviously it is important for the Tote (or Betfred) to maintain some public confidence in the Tote pools, else no-one sensible will bet serious money into them and their takeout will fall.
At the same time, if they HAVE changed the payout, then this is illegal and needs to be examined by the authorities.
At a guess, the races being ‘targeted’ for manipulation are likely to be smaller field races. The win dividend is being manipulated by money being placed on horses other than the favourite or a small number of shorter priced horses, and those involved are backing these horses at tote-returns with non-participating bookmakers (probably abroad).
Every so often, one of the outsiders wins, and tiny dividends are paid out, but often, they will be picking up big payouts when the favoured horses go in.
I’m not sure their analyses, or reassurances, are doing anything other than trying to minimise a clear problem, and I can see problems brewing…
