The Derby is supposed to be the greatest 3yo race in the world, so why do they continue to run it on the side of a hill? They should move it to either Ascot or York.
June 6, 2011 at 14:08 #359244Disagree. Epsom’s quirkiness makes it the great race it is and demands that only the best horses win.
The last place I’d move it to is York where so often the form book flies out of the window.
June 6, 2011 at 15:19 #359255Epsom Derby: the ultimate test, where if a horse becomes unbalanced it’s usually game over.
Irish Derby: the Curragh probably provides the fairest test for 3yo’s over a mile and a half. Rarely any hard luck stories.
You would then think that perhaps Epsom throws up winners that maybe were not the best horse in the race, yet would anyone argue that there were better horses in behind Workforce, Sea The Stars and New Approach?
At any rate there’s only two chances of the race being moved away from Epsom: slim and none.

As the race as always been run at Epsom apart from the war years I would imagine the venue is a major contributory factor in the race’s reputation as "the greatest 3yo race in the world" which you refer to and it’s success.
June 6, 2011 at 17:25 #359266Crikey – they’ve already moved the Champion Stakes, don’t give them any more ideas!!
June 6, 2011 at 17:35 #359268June 6, 2011 at 17:38 #359269Got me thinking now. The Grand National at Cartmel would be some spectacle!! The Gold Cup at Bangor On Dee & the Champion Hurdle at Southwell. I’ll write to RFC immediately if not sooner!!
Epsom & the Derby are synonymous with one another & the unique course makes it what it is. No way, barring act of God will it ever move venue.

Actually, if you squint and use your imagination quite a lot, Cartmel already resembles the Mildmay course… Use the stone walls as obstacles, let ’em run through the woods and have them take on the notorious and fearsome "car park" (taxis who?). The course is
already frequently patronized by D McCain and I’m sure the Moffatts will continue to provide the race with their once a decade 33>50/1 shot. What’s Mr RFC’s number? I’ll call him myself!
Mind you, your other ideas are daft. You can’t hold OUR Gold Cup in Wales and Southwell’s nature of being impossible to pronounce is only begging for a logistical nightmare.

98% of the world’s most important races are run on a flat track. Why do you think that is? The majority of the racing at Epsom is of a very poor standard and that is because most owners and trainers don’t want to run their good horses on the course . It’s a dump……and that’s official!!!
June 7, 2011 at 11:22 #359378It is almost certain that The Derby will be moved from Epsom to Newmarket…
when WW3 comes around.

June 7, 2011 at 11:27 #359380That the Derby is run at Epsom is what makes it the race it is – in my view it is the ultimate test of horse and rider on the flat and both have to be good on the Derby course, there is no such thing as a "steering job" in that race.
From the steep uphill climb at the start, which will find out any horse who is too keen, to the deceptive sweeping turn as they take a breather a mile out.
Then, six furlongs from home, the increased pace of the descent into Tattenham Corner begins and if that is not enough the fearsome home straight awaits.
It looks so wide and inviting at the three furlong marker, but the camber will play its part, getting more pronounced as the finishing line approaches, all the time the far rail acting like an almost irresistible horse magnet.
If people want a 12f championship race on a more "traditional" track we have the Arc in October.
