Anyone any thoughts on the St Leger cant have Boscabel , Thought Mahler ran a good trial but o briens also got Soldier of fortune , macarthur ( just the type to come good ) and Mount Nelson surely a non stayer chuck in Aqaleem and Arabian Gulf could be fascinating read that Lucarno will not be running
June 25, 2007 at 12:19 #66385I personally think Anton Chekhov would be an interesting bet if turning up. His pedigree suggests he should stay and he could emerge as a contender.
June 25, 2007 at 12:28 #66386How about All My Loving, is she entered?
Colin
June 25, 2007 at 12:34 #66387I don’t think the entries have been confirmed have they? Yes All My Loving would be interesting as she looked she wasn’t the fastest in her last two starts.
June 25, 2007 at 13:20 #66388Another possibles then from o brien All my loving would be interesting with the allowance
June 25, 2007 at 15:59 #66389Authorized. Eclipse, King George, St Leger, Arc.
Win those four and he goes down as a legend of the turf. Would be an achievement to rival a triple crown win.
Won’t happen I know but its what I’d like to see.
June 25, 2007 at 16:08 #66390Wouldn’t we all Flash. The Leger has lost its sparkle over the years as horses that win are primarily NH stallions so no one bothers with it anymore. Im sure Sheikh Mohammed has it as a must have on his requirements list!
June 25, 2007 at 22:33 #66391I’ve not had a really good think yet, but from the Derby you have to say that the first two home looked to be finishing strongest, especially EM who seemed to be staying on really well. Authorized will have bigger fish to fry I’d imagine, but I’m surprised that EM isn’t quoted at all in books for the St Leger.
June 25, 2007 at 22:47 #66392Eagle Mountain is a very short price for the Irish Derby. If he wins that, there’s no chance that hell end up in the Leger.
June 25, 2007 at 23:33 #66393You’re right, but I fail to see why winning the Irish Derby should completely and utterly rule him out of the St Leger. If he continues to run over 12f, he’ll most likely be trounced by Authorized each time their two paths cross. IMHO, he’ll stay the extra 2f, so why not go for a Classic win against a field in which he’ll have probably beaten most of the big players already?
June 26, 2007 at 00:57 #66394Because it may perversely decrease his stud value and it holds little prestige now if was guessing Friggo.
June 26, 2007 at 05:56 #66395Indeed FSL.
I believe that the only reason to run a Derby winner in the St Leger nowadays would be in the hope that it fades and finishes well beaten, thus proving that it doesn’t stay and therefore must be a faster horse rather than a plodder.
Sadly, proven stamina beyond 10f for a stallion is a bit of an albatross in this day and age.
June 26, 2007 at 06:58 #66396indeed you all make very valid points regarding stallions and more is the pitty in my humble opinion. with regards the leger though of the derby runners i think Aqaleem looks the most likely type even if EM were to show up. EM was ridden for 2nd in the derby once authorized had flown and had aqaleem tapped for toe rather than stamina in my opinion.
that is of course assuming authorized doesnt show, which he wont!
June 26, 2007 at 09:21 #66397Would appear (looking at todays times) that Aqaleem is being aimed squarely at the leger.
Gordon stakes followed by the Voltiger
June 26, 2007 at 09:49 #66398Without even getting into the Leger-is-bad-for-stud-value thing, he would be much more likely to run in the Irish Champion Stakes, which is on the previous week this year.
June 27, 2007 at 12:28 #66399Surely the national hunt needs the good staying horses(St.Leger winners) as stallions. They upgrade the hunter type mares.
June 27, 2007 at 21:45 #66400I reckon if Mahler runs he’ll win it. I backed him in the Derby but I think it was on the sharp side for him as he needs a test of stamina, he got that on his next outing and he won quite impressively.
He’s guaranteed to stay the distance and will relish the ground whether it’s firm or heavy
