Many of the principle contenders in the Grade 1 Champion Novice Chase have been beating each other all year so it could pay to side with a horse who brings different form to the equation in the form of
Djakadam
. There was big word for him at Leopardstown when he won his beginners’ chase and he built on that with a smooth win over Bright New Dawn. The only doubt I have about Djakadam is on the stamina front: he was travelling so comfortably in the JLT before falling that you would wonder if he’ll have the stamina for this. Given that none of the opposition look anything special I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. I’m willing to go against old ally Ballycasey after his recent fall.
Punchestown 6.40
Djakadam
€20 win @ 11/4 (BV)+ €490.71
April 29, 2014 at 08:48 #477226I’ve jumped aboard the machine in the 2 miler Tommy.
Faugheen……………..

The only way he gets beaten is if he throws in a shocker imo, can’t wait to get there!
April 29, 2014 at 09:06 #477227A bet for tomorrow now in the Champion Bumper.
Shaneshill
looks a very fair price at 4/1. He ran an excellent race behind Silver Concorde at Cheltenham and I think he can reverse the placings with that runner around Punchestown. Silver Concorde got a dream run around the rail that day and everything seemed to fall right for him on the day. Punchestown is a quicker track than Cheltenham and Shaneshill could be better suited here. I think there’s very little between Shaneshill and Silver Concorde on Cheltenham form and at the prices Shaneshill looks the one to side with. I really like Black Hercules too but on decent ground over two miles I think his stable companion will be too quick for him. Another positive for Shaneshill is the booking of Jamie Codd. Also, keep an eye on Fine Article who has been the subject of glowing reports up and down Co. Wexford. This might be too much for him at this stage of his career but it wouldn’t surprise if he ran well. He’ll be a staying chaser in time I would think, and is a half brother to the giant Joncol.
Punchestown Champion Bumper
Shaneshill
€20 e/w @ 4/1+ €450.71
April 29, 2014 at 09:29 #477233Another bet for later in the week now in the shape of
Hurricane Fly
in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle. 11/8 looks an excellent price and I expect him to be favourite come the day. He has met Jezki three times this year, beating him twice and being beaten himself last time out at Cheltenham. On both occasions he beat Jezki that rival received pretty chronic rides but you’d still have to be impressed with how Hurricane Fly took care of business. Friday’s conditions will be very different to Cheltenham and looking at the entries it wouldn’t surprise if there is just three runners declared. I would think that will suit Hurricane Fly more of the pair. I also have a feeling that Jezki is a better horse left handed, despite an excellent record this way around. He has a tendency to hang left and that could be enough to open the door for The Hurricane. The fact remains that Hurricane Fly hasn’t been beaten in Ireland since Solwhit and Muirhead finished ahead of him in a Morgiana Hurdle many moons ago…

Hurricane Fly
€40 win @ 11/8 (BV)+ €410.71

CHELTENIAN
FIRST LIEUTENANTMy punchestown bets hope you having a nice time Tommy.Nice to see Sizing win too
April 30, 2014 at 10:27 #477368Cheers Darren, I was just going to go Friday because I wanted to see Faugheen and Hurricane Fly but Willie Mullins threw a spanner in the works running Faugheen yesterday. So long story short I’m hoping to go Friday as well

Had a great day yesterday, Faugheen confirmed what I’ve been saying for the umpteenth time by doing what he does best. The last time a horse impressed me like that was when the Hurricane won at Leopardstown as a novice. Whereas Hurricane Fly won that with a turn of foot Faugheen is just relentless. A super animal.
However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the win of Sizing Europe. He got a great reception from the stands as he rolled back the years to win pretty easily in the end. What a career he has had.
I’ve backed Don Poli and First Lieutenant today too, although I’m leaving the Cheltenian race alone, a bit of a head scratcher!

I’ve already done Shaneshill for today and here are the rest of my bets:At odds of 2/1 I was willing to let
Don Poli
run but he’s drifted to 5/2 now so I’m a backer. He did the business for me at Cheltenham, he was massively impressive that day and 3m should be no issue. This is a step up in class but any horse who wins a Cheltenham Festival handicap in that manner has a proper engine. This is a good race with Very Wood, Apache Jack and Aintree winner Beat That all involved but I’m remaining loyal to the Don.
Punchestown 4.55
Don Poli
€20 win @ 5/2 (PP)I’ve backed two horses in the Gold Cup:
Boston Bob
(11/4) to win and
First Lieutenant
(6/1 e/w). First Lieutenant saves his best for the spring and I think the application of first time blinkers could be the making of him. He’s very hard to see out of the frame. The penny finally seemed to drop with Boston Bob last time at Aintree and three miles on good ground should be right up his alley. I’m happy to take these two against the field. Paddy Power are doing a money back special on this if your bet comes second or third (this is built for First Lieutenant backers!).
Punchestown 5.50

First Lieutenant, €10 e/w, €10 win @ 6/1 (PP)I may also back

One of those days, have had a good start to the week!Great ride from Jamie Codd, rode the rest to sleep but I suppose he had the horse under him to be able kick on and run to the line from some way out.
