Grasshopper nails it. Derek Thompson in particular probably drives more people away from racing than he does attract people to the sport. He is definately detrimental to the sport of racing and should be sacked immediately.
Why exactly? Why would he in particular drive people away from the sport? He’s been in it over 25 years and still going strong.
You know it’s small minded; ignorant people like yourself who are actually bad for the sport. In the whole sports field horse racing is pretty much ignored, as shown on sports personality, so anyone who does work and does their bit to promote such a good sport deserves our respect. Not to be bullied. Now i can understand why people would see big Mac as such a negative with his outlandish opinions and chauvinistic ways, but even then i’d not call for him to be sacked as he is a fellow racegoer who, like Tommo loves his racing.
So, i’ll refer to my first question and ask you why should he be sacked? and why he is so detrimental to the sport? Because in my eyes whenever i’ve heard him on tv, radio or when i’ve met him he has been nothing but 100% into his racing, never negative about it and always encouraged new racegoers.
January 7, 2009 at 14:42 #202147Kauto , its that 25 yrs thats causing the problem, their format and presenters/presentation has remained the exact same
Its bland and boring , the only character they had is currently semi banned from appearing , at least hes not banal and mind bogglingly boring like the rest of them
I stopped watching it 2 yrs ago , and to be honest why would I want to support its staid existence
cheers

January 7, 2009 at 14:51 #202151without wishing to get into the thommo debate i cant help myself, the fact that he has been around for however long it is is a sad indictment of the people that employ him rather than himself,i can just about tolerate him on c4 but his race commentary is awful,i counted the words (and here comes) at least 20times at the end of the races he was commentating on, change the record thommo please.
January 7, 2009 at 20:45 #202280Aragorn I have also been known to remove my
bloomers in the exchange ring.It is not only the broadcasters
it is the product that sits on difficult legs.
Zara**** wont be seen again
like a lot of four legged three year olds
but Ryan Giggs hobbling about on two just goes on and on
and people lose their favourites
and more importantly their affiliation drifts elsewhere
to more vital sports like the muscle of Murray
or those horrible cookery shows
where Ecclestones boy racers burn rubber
with cameras attached.
Bandy races are now called classified
but they do little more to whet than Lingfield car park
and there has been an overabundance of shoddy product. The jumping game is more attention grabbing
but wont carry the sport through the summer
and the difficulty of the product is emphasised
by barrydennisspeak which famously slated here that
racing is boringJanuary 7, 2009 at 22:40 #202328And happy new year to you too ricky…Agree with every word…
If a racing preview programmme cant get me tuning in, then it really is poor
Didnt see the incident of course, but i have always found Plunkett patronising and arrogant. At the other end of the spectrum, I find Tanya a monotoned bore too
January 7, 2009 at 22:57 #202335I don’t find anything wrong with Plunkett, she does know her stuff in fairness. She is not there from a betting angle, she knows her area extremely well which is horses. Tanya is a pain in the hole.

Now theres a thought!!!!!
cheers Clive and the same to you , thing is though whilst all this mindless jockeying ( ) for tv coverage goes on , what impact will it have on attracting new supporters to our game , and what are the chances that the BBC coverage would do that , I suppose it could not be any worse than the present CH 4 FORMULA
comments please
cheers

January 7, 2009 at 23:08 #202344I really like Alice; think she does a good job of interviewing the jockeys after races.
January 7, 2009 at 23:38 #202359KautoStar1 – if you cannot see why Thommo shud be dismissed immediately from national tv then you are surely living in the clouds. Try listening to him commentating on a race. Don’t tell me. You think he’s great The falseness of the man knows no bounds either. He’s despicable. A few mates of mine who weren’t into racing saw him on C4 a few weeks ago and said to me. "Who’s the dic*khead with the mike?" I just said "Aye, don’t mind him. Some of the others are better – kind of". This is the sort of thing that puts people off racing. The sport would be immeasurably better off without that complete and utter idiot.

Harbour Pilot:
I know of no-one, except for kids, who will be inspired to become or not become a racing fan based on who they watch or listen too on TV. To adults, TV (especially) does not really work on that level.
Believe it or not, Derek Thompson can be a very good racing journalist and commentator. I can’t claim to understand the persona he has developed, which in many ways makes me cringe – but he is successful, I think, however, he would be more successful if he came over more seriously.
But he does understand racing is entertainment but I think it needs to be tempered with the fact it is sporting entertainment.
