The opening race at 2.13 on Friday saw a horse slip on the turn.

The course was then inspected and a decision was taken to abandon racing, apart from the 4.00 – the only race on the straight course.

Was it really worth running only this race? I know that the owners had paid their money etc and it meant some more betting turnover could be generated (although I doubt a 6 furlong handicap at a minor meeting produced much). But I wonder how many racegoers stayed around to just watch one not very distinguished race, over one hour after the decision to call off the fixture?

Wouldn’t it have been better to just abandon the meeting?

Who would have benefitted from abandoning the rest of the meeting? Racegoers get a full refund and didn’t have to wait for the 4.00 if they preferred not to.
